Score will go to Munich or Star Wars I think.

Art Direction is a maybe, Costumes is a definate, Make-Up probably, Gong Li is a distinct possibility.

At least 2, at most 5.

I still think it will get either Make up or Cinematography. I have it getting 4 out of 6 possible tech categories and 1 out of 2 acting noms.

Wouldn't it be funny if it actually managed to get more noms than the insanely more acclaimed A History of Violence (which I have at 3 noms as of now)?

A History... could get as few as 1 nomination (Bello is for sure).

And that makes me a sad, sad panda.

Then again, Grizzly Man has been thrown out, Madgascar will get a nomination, "So Long and Thanks for all the Fish" won't be nominated, and Mortensen won't get any acknowledgement, so this year is kind of bunk anyway!

I am sure the song will get nominated.

AHOV should get a screenplay nod too.

I'm glad at least Bello will get a nod, though History deserve more then that..so in classic Academy fashion it will all but be ignored.

Yes, it's up to 33% at RT now. The added non-COTC critics are getting more lenient.

Makeup is no longer a possibility, and I'll be quite surprised if it makes out of the semifinal list of sound editing, even though that category had given surprises in the past (e.g. Time Machine). The ASC nod makes Cinematography a strong possibility now. Ziyi still stands a 50/50 chance to sneak in the Best Actress shortlist. Score is also close to be a lock for nomination, after BFCA's win. Costume Design and Art Direction are still looking likely, so I'm hoping for 5 noms and will settle for 4.

After some deliberation while making my predictions, I have come to a conclusion that Zhang Ziyi will most likely not get a nod here. This year there are already so many young first-time nominees that are sure bets for a nom, that I don't think they will go for another one, especially from a movie bashed by critics. Reese Witherspoon and most likely Keira Knightley are pretty certainly getting their Best Actress noms already, with Felicity Huffman being another first-time nominee. Then in the supporting categories we'll have Maria Bello (most likely), Amy Adams, Michelle Williams, Rachel Weisz, Jake Gyllenhaal... Many young faces from critically lauded movies. Even with my exclusion of Zhang Ziyi from my predictions, I already had 15 first-time nominees being nominated, so... I think her spot might go to either Joan Allen or Charlize Theron.

Other than that I see Geisha getting the following:

Best Costume Design
Best Art Direction
Best Score
Best Cinematography

From Engin's page, I gathered all the top 10's that Memoirs of a Geisha has gotten so far and listed them below in alphabetical order, along with any commentaries the critics wrote:

Marie Asner (The Phantom Tollbooth)
• Brokeback Mountain
• Capote
• The Constant Gardener
• Everything is Illuminated
• Good Night, and Good Luck.
• A History of Violence
• King Kong
• March of the Penguins
• Memoirs of a Geisha
• Munich

Keith Cohen (Sun Newspapers)
01. Cinderella Man
02. Memoirs of a Geisha
03. The Constant Gardener
04. Munich
05. Prime
06. Dreamer
07. The Upside of Anger
08. Charlie & the Chocolate Factory
09. The Family Stone
10. The Producers

Richard Corliss (Time)
01. The White Diamond
02. Saraband
03. 2046
04. The Squid and the Whale
05. Caché
06. The New World
07. The Constant Gardener
08. Kung Fu Hustle
09. Memoirs of a Geisha
10. Chicken Little; Wallace and Gromit in the Curse of the Were-Rabbit; and Millions

Quote:
This adaptation of Arthur Golden’s best-seller baby-stepped onscreen with high hopes and big hype (including a cover story I wrote for TIME Asia). On opening day, the smarter critics slapped Geisha out of its reverie, and no one knows if the Motion Picture Academy members, for whom it was made, will ignore the reviews and give it lots of Oscar nominations. But as one of the movie’s admirers, I’m sticking to my story: that this far-East fairy tale, about the geisha Cinderella (Zhang Ziyi), her wicked stepsister (Gong Li), her fairy godmother (Michelle Yeoh) and the faraway prince (Ken Watanabe) she dreams of, is a delicate, robust and emotionally satisfying throwback to the sweeping romances Hollywood once specialized in and now mostly ignores. Its visual splendor never obscures the furtive, assertive heart beating under the kimono. I loved seeing most of my favorite Chinese actresses in one movie (even if they were turning Japanese), and watching Gong Li stride away with her first big English-language picture. As the vindictive Hatsumomo, the Gongster flashes a stiletto stare that can burn in passion or turn on a rival with Freon fury. Those are pleasures enough for this unapologetic reviewer.

Shawn Edwards (Fox-TV)
01. King Kong
02. Crash
03. Batman Begins
04. Memoirs of a Geisha
05. Hustle & Flow
06. Sin City
07. The Chronicles of Narnia
08. Kung Fu Hustle
09. The 40 Year-Old Virgin
10. Lords of Dogtown

Jeanine Fritz (Dirt)
01. Sin City
02. Memoirs of a Geisha
03. Everything is Illuminated
04. Brokeback Mountain
05. Million Dollar Baby
06. Cinderella Man
07. Dear Frankie
08. King Kong
09. Serenity
10. Batman Begins

Quote:
This one will be pooped on by many for being gooshy and gloomy and filled with non-Japanese actresses. Never mind them. Director Rob Marshall snatched up cinematographer Dion Beebe (who also shot "Chicago" with Marshall), and what they've given us is a visually breathtaking film, but without all that annoying singing.

Every performance is top-notch, the story is moving though not over-sentimental, and hours after I left the theater blinking, the world that was created on-screen continued to resonate in my little black heart.

Catherine Graham (Santa Cruz Sentinel)
• Grizzly Man
• Memoirs of a Geisha
• Ladies in Lavender
• Capote
• Good Night, and Good Luck.
• Shopgirl
• March of the Penguins
• Batman Begins
• Brokeback Mountain

Quote:
For its sheer visual impact and beauty as an oasis in unspeakably difficult times, Rob Marshall's dark and tragic adaptation of the beloved novel packs a wallop.

Louis B. Hobson (Calgary Sun)
01. Brokeback Mountain
02. Crash
03. Capote
04. A History of Violence
05. C.R.A.Z.Y.
06. Memoirs of a Geisha
07. Match Point
08. Good Night, and Good Luck.
09. Munich
10. Pride & Prejudice

Quote:
There's a shimmering quality to Rob Marshall's version of this best-seller about a young country girl who becomes one of Japan's most famous and influential geishas. The pageantry, sweeping melodrama and exquisite attention to detail make this a true guilty pleasure film. It is one of the few films this year that showcases so many exceptional female performances from the exquisite Ziyi Zhang to the feisty Gong Li and the noble Michelle Yeoh. It's a story of unspoken love that claws at the heart while it enriches the soul.

Michael H. Kleinschrodt (New Orleans Times-Picayune)
01. Cinderella Man
02. Crash
03. Brokeback Mountain
04. Munich
05. Batman Begins
06. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
07. Memoirs of a Geisha
08. Match Point
09. King Kong
10. Sin City

Quote:
The literary high point of the cinematic year arrived with Rob Marshall's exquisitely designed and photographed adaptation of Arthur Golden's novel. The romance has all of the ingredients for which Oscar looks: epic sweep, gorgeous sets and costumes, beautiful lighting and cinematography, and fine performances. A trio of Asian actresses -- Ziyi Zhang, Gong Li and Michelle Yeoh -- bring their characters vividly to life in a period tale with exotic appeal.

Craig Kopp (Community Press / 55WRC / Fox19)
01. Capote
02. Munich
03. Good Night, and Good Luck.
04. Hustle & Flow
05. Crash
06. The Constant Gardener
07. A History of Violence
08. Memoirs of a Geisha
09. King Kong
10. March of the Penguins

Quote:
Simply the classiest big studio film I saw in 2005. Based on the best-selling book about a Japanese geisha with a mind of her own, "Memoirs of a Geisha" is beautifully dramatic and enticingly exotic. This all-Asian cast may not be household names, but they are so good your eyes can never leave the screen.

Quote:
Rarely has Hollywood captured the tradition and elegance of the Japanese culture as it has in this film. Of course, some have cried foul as it was done in English, by an American director, with Chinese actresses, in California. Hey, it's called "pretending." We do it all of the time. Remember just last week? That smile on your face at the company Christmas party? Don't listen to the boo birds.

08. A History of Violence
09. Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang
10. Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith

Quote:
I don't generally compare books with the movies they're turned into, but this is one of those rare cases where it worked extremely well. Obviously a lot of details from the Arthur Golden novel about the travails and triumphs of a young Geisha in pre-WWII Japan are gone. But the essence of the story, the mood, and seemingly all the right, important parts are here. Gong Li is quite malevolent as Hatsumomo. Beautifully, stunningly lit and photographed, the film offers a complete immersion into another world.

Kent Tentschert (Webster-Kirkwood Times)
• Brokeback Mountain
• Capote
• Cinderella Man
• The Constant Gardener
• King Kong
• Memoirs of a Geisha
• Sin City
• Syriana
• Walk the Line
• War of the Worlds

Quote:
This epic is one of the most visually stunning films of the year. Add to this oppression and a strong love story and you have the ingredients for a memorable film.

Jan Wahl (KRON-TV / KCBS Radio)
• Brokeback Mountain
• Capote
• Cinderella Man
• Good Night, and Good Luck.
• Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
• Memoirs of a Geisha
• Mrs. Henderson Presents
• North Country
• Transamerica
• The White Countess

Quote:
Based on the best-selling novel by Arthur Golden, this is the epic saga of a young girl sold into the world of the Geisha. Director Rob Marshall perfectly captures the spirit, if not all of the plot and details, of this powerful story. From the stunning cinematography (some of it shot in the Bay Area) to the haunting musical score by John Williams (with help from Yoyo Ma and Itzak Perlman!). The casting is excellent, with actors and actresses that don't seem taken from the shallow pool of over-rated Hollywood stars. For those who have read the book, there will be disappointments. But taken as a film experience..four hats!

I wonder if Memoirs of a Geisha wins Best Score at the Oscars, whether it'll be the lowest-RT-rated movie to ever win an Oscar...

Pearl Harbor has 25%. :)

In the meantime, Memoirs is up to 34%.

However, PH only won one, so if Memoirs can win Score and say Costume Design, it may be the lowest RT-rated film to win multiple Oscars.

It also might be the lowest-rated RT flick to actually get over three noms.

I think it will get.

Best Score.
Best Art Direction
Best Cinetography
Best Costume Design.

So 4 is the worst it can do. I think it could win at least one.

Final result:

Art Direction
Cinematography
Costume Design
Sound Editing
Sound Mixing
Score

Getting two sound noms is surprising. Overall, 6 are as good as one can hope for. I'm very happy to accept that after an unbelievable roller-coaster ride. It has a chance to win as many as 3 (I'm not dreaming 4), and wouldn't that be something to tie Brokeback Mountain for the most win, if the unlikely scenario happens.

xiayun, Memoirs is 8th on your list, but you continue banging the Geisha drum over movies you seem, by all accounts, to have enjoyed more.

What's the deal, yo?

Because it's a film that I have been following for over a year now. :) And because my love to Ziyi and Gong Li. It's a film that I feel personal attachment to. With that said, I never campaigned it for best picture/director/screenplay (or voted for those categories myself) after seeing the film, so I don't think I was doing anything blindly.

Yeah, Arthur, that has been cleared up.

I see. It felt like you had some personal stake in the success/failure of the movie. And it seems you may have.
