This adaptation of Arthur Golden’s best-seller baby-stepped onscreen with high hopes and big hype (including a cover story I wrote for TIME Asia). On opening day, the smarter critics slapped Geisha out of its reverie, and no one knows if the Motion Picture Academy members, for whom it was made, will ignore the reviews and give it lots of Oscar nominations. But as one of the movie’s admirers, I’m sticking to my story: that this far-East fairy tale, about the geisha Cinderella (Zhang Ziyi), her wicked stepsister (Gong Li), her fairy godmother (Michelle Yeoh) and the faraway prince (Ken Watanabe) she dreams of, is a delicate, robust and emotionally satisfying throwback to the sweeping romances Hollywood once specialized in and now mostly ignores. Its visual splendor never obscures the furtive, assertive heart beating under the kimono. I loved seeing most of my favorite Chinese actresses in one movie (even if they were turning Japanese), and watching Gong Li stride away with her first big English-language picture. As the vindictive Hatsumomo, the Gongster flashes a stiletto stare that can burn in passion or turn on a rival with Freon fury. Those are pleasures enough for this unapologetic reviewer.

This one will be pooped on by many for being gooshy and gloomy and filled with non-Japanese actresses. Never mind them. Director Rob Marshall snatched up cinematographer Dion Beebe (who also shot "Chicago" with Marshall), and what they've given us is a visually breathtaking film, but without all that annoying singing.
Every performance is top-notch, the story is moving though not over-sentimental, and hours after I left the theater blinking, the world that was created on-screen continued to resonate in my little black heart.

For its sheer visual impact and beauty as an oasis in unspeakably difficult times, Rob Marshall's dark and tragic adaptation of the beloved novel packs a wallop.

There's a shimmering quality to Rob Marshall's version of this best-seller about a young country girl who becomes one of Japan's most famous and influential geishas. The pageantry, sweeping melodrama and exquisite attention to detail make this a true guilty pleasure film. It is one of the few films this year that showcases so many exceptional female performances from the exquisite Ziyi Zhang to the feisty Gong Li and the noble Michelle Yeoh. It's a story of unspoken love that claws at the heart while it enriches the soul.

The literary high point of the cinematic year arrived with Rob Marshall's exquisitely designed and photographed adaptation of Arthur Golden's novel. The romance has all of the ingredients for which Oscar looks: epic sweep, gorgeous sets and costumes, beautiful lighting and cinematography, and fine performances. A trio of Asian actresses -- Ziyi Zhang, Gong Li and Michelle Yeoh -- bring their characters vividly to life in a period tale with exotic appeal.

Simply the classiest big studio film I saw in 2005. Based on the best-selling book about a Japanese geisha with a mind of her own, "Memoirs of a Geisha" is beautifully dramatic and enticingly exotic. This all-Asian cast may not be household names, but they are so good your eyes can never leave the screen.

Rarely has Hollywood captured the tradition and elegance of the Japanese culture as it has in this film. Of course, some have cried foul as it was done in English, by an American director, with Chinese actresses, in California. Hey, it's called "pretending." We do it all of the time. Remember just last week? That smile on your face at the company Christmas party? Don't listen to the boo birds.

I don't generally compare books with the movies they're turned into, but this is one of those rare cases where it worked extremely well. Obviously a lot of details from the Arthur Golden novel about the travails and triumphs of a young Geisha in pre-WWII Japan are gone. But the essence of the story, the mood, and seemingly all the right, important parts are here. Gong Li is quite malevolent as Hatsumomo. Beautifully, stunningly lit and photographed, the film offers a complete immersion into another world.

Quote:
Based on the best-selling novel by Arthur Golden, this is the epic saga of a young girl sold into the world of the Geisha. Director Rob Marshall perfectly captures the spirit, if not all of the plot and details, of this powerful story. From the stunning cinematography (some of it shot in the Bay Area) to the haunting musical score by John Williams (with help from Yoyo Ma and Itzak Perlman!). The casting is excellent, with actors and actresses that don't seem taken from the shallow pool of over-rated Hollywood stars. For those who have read the book, there will be disappointments. But taken as a film experience..four hats!
