Academy, you just lost ALL your respect with me. All of it. You have none. Whores. Geez, the Miley Cyrus snub isn't that big a deal. Calm down. I know you really wanted her to get in. My condolences.

Re: The Official Oscar Nominations Thread - (First Post Updated)
I'm disappointed with the oscar nominations. They really stuck with 5 particular films for the main categories. There's much less a feeling of spreading the wealth this year.
I'm very disappointed that TDK didn't get a BP nod. I just don't see how a person can ignore a movie of good quality that was also equally popular enough to earn over 500 million. I just don't get that.
Kate Winslet being nodded for Reader instead of RR. Does she have much of a chance to win this category now? I thought she was stronger in RR.
Josh Brolin for Milk is kind of bleh to me because there wasn't much to that role or interesting about it. I would have preferred Franco.
I'm happy that Ledger got his nod. I appreciate that Shannon was nodded for RR. I guess I'll have to see Doubt now since it got so much love. I still have yet to see Slumdog.
Overall, I'm not to excited about the nominations but I hope that the show does well simply because Jackman is hosting and I hope he hosts more than once because I know he'll show up even though the voters didn't quite show up.

I'm kinda stunned that Slumdog Millionaire got ten noms.
Looks like it'll become the first BP winner since ROTK without acting noms.

Re: The Official Oscar Nominations Thread - (First Post Updated)
On the Reader: Iwo Jima Clint'ing Dreamgirls surprised me more, at the time I didn't even consider the possibility. In the end I predicted Wall-E getting in over TDK with a very heavy reservation on The Reader or maybe Revo. Road as a spoiler. I didn't notice even till yesterday that TR's BFCA score is a very good and BP worthy 87, which means more than RT. With the Globes (which have made a comeback officially) and BAFTA, and as a Holocaust film who's competition is an offkilter comic book nom, it clearly hung in the shadows.
I don't know how anyone felt safe with a comic book blockbuster being a shoo-in. I mean with that and the SAG/Globes/BAFTA snub, by far far far and away it stood as the weakest of the big 5. The other 4 were locks just because they had so much on TDK, if anything was to miss, that was it and not them surely. But somehow people thought a Nixon famouspersonpic that's showed up in every possible place in the race as more vulnerable, and TDK AND Wall-E could get in, even resorting to Milk and Button getting hit on nom day instead of it. rightttt.
This also puts the box-office importance myth to rest. It really doesn't matter much. People don't care about the numbers when they vote, they care about the movie.
I'm definitely shocked surprised beat Nolan though. I thought those 5 were at least in.
Biggest shocker is Kate somehow jumping to Actress... I thought Hawkins was in trouble, but I didn't think Kate in the Reader would be the one that gets her! Hopefully she wins for sure now
No Clint is another sort of foreseeable one. He didn't have a great run in the race, he's been mostly thrown in because he's Clint. Good call Mavver
No Bruce : ( No Hellboy in Visual effects : (
Oh, and Slumdog is a beast. BEAST.

I don't understand why no one realizes that The Reader is a nazi SYMPATHIZING film. Apparently, the academy didn't get that either.

It's more awful that they didn't nominate Wall-E or The Wrestler instead, or even gave a Director or Adapted Screenplay consolation prize.
Really, getting thrown out for The Reader?

We have to remember that SAG was the guild that didn't go TDK and they are, of course, the biggest voting bloc. Fanboys, direct your hate there.

Hell, a Doubt Best Pic nom would have been more understandable.

Re: The Official Oscar Nominations Thread - (First Post Updated)
It is pretty shocking that REVOLUTIONARY ROAD was snubbed in the major categories. Obviously the biggest surprise is Kate not getting nominated for Best Actress for it. I'm surprised they went against everyone else and put her for lead in The Reader. But oh well. At least she got nominated. With as much love as that movie has (for some reason, since reviews aren't amazing) I believe she's going to win.
THE READER getting in for Best Picture isn't a surprise to me. I predicted it would. But the real shocker is Best Director. I never thought it would make it in there.
It's complete bullshit that "The Wrestler" didn't get a Best Song nomination. How could that be? It seemed like a lock and has been winning everywhere. Plus, it's a great song.
I wish Wendy & Lucy had been released by someone like Sony Pictures Classics because Michelle Williams would have been nominated for sure then. What a shame!
Too bad about Rosemarie DeWitt too.

The Reader surpassed Doubt for me by way of the the Globes, its director nom in particular was a big light. And naturally the BAFTAs support was there. If Doubt had a chance it needed a BP drama nod at the Globes, I mean it's exactly the type of film they nominate.

No BP nom for TDK and no noms at all for Gran Torino illustrate how irrelevant The Oscars should be and will become if they keep it up. The Reader?!?! Really?!!!

Re: The Official Oscar Nominations Thread - (First Post Updated)
This is the 2nd year in the row that people have underestimated the Globes' relative importance/correlation with the Oscars.
When the Globes recognized Atonement, everyone was "the Globes don't know what they're doing, Atonement isn't happening, blah blah blah". Then Atonement is nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars (and receives 7 nominations overall).
This year, the Globes recognize The Reader, everyone was "the Globes don't know what they're doing, The Reader isn't happening, blah blah blah". Then The Reader is nominated for Best Picture and Best Director, and Best Actress (and receives 5 nominations overall).
Peace, Mike
