Many, many factors for him (physical transformation to play a well-known person, Ray's death last year)...but he's also against a veteran (Clint Eastwood) who's never won Best Actor, nominated for a film that's known as the best of his career. You also have another physical transformative performance by someone whose film leads all nominations (Leo DiCaprio). HOTEL RWANDA is surging as well...so don't even think about counting Don Cheadle out.
Johnny Depp you can count out though.
Possibly yes, but he was also nominated last year against another Clint Eastwood film, Mystic River. In that year the Academy, which has a history of correcting past wrongs awarded Sean Penn the Oscar as it was his 4th nomination but first win. I would not be surprised if the race came down to Depp and Foxx but ultimately I think Foxx will win.

Nawww, actress was a given. Screenplay was in the running. An they always have a surprise director nominee. (Besides Hotel Rwanda did equally well, if not better...why would you say Vera drake was more of a contender in the best picture race than Vera Drake?)
City of God had director and screenplay, yet I don't think it was close tog etting a best pic nomination.
I think campaigning AGAINST the movie would help it. The movie need attention (it has less than $3 million at the box office) so what better way....

Um...yes, it was eligible. It was nominated for Cinematography...

Good comparison, I agree. The same goes for Talk to her which had a Screenplay and a Director nom.

yes but atleast hollywood still has different genre than the typical 2 or 3 stories that are forced down our throats again and again and again in the same manner as they always have been.

I can´t believe they didn´t nom ESOTSM for Editing. I thought it was a lock.

Sideways is the only odd nomminee it seems like for picture. I know it was a lock, but it just seems like the most unusual.

Where I live there aren't very many limited released. It took Phantom of the Opera expanding to over 1500 locations until it started showing near me.

This was covered a few pages ago. Documentary features must be released between 9/30 and 8/31 to be eligible.

Hehe. CatalinaSandino Moreno is one prediction I can be proud of. I've had her (more or less  ) since the summer. When no one else believed it.
Hey it's my one chance to show off, after my crappy predictions.

As would I. But I'm fairly happy with the actress nominations. Especially Sophie Okonodo from Hotel Rwanda.
