The first awards? Hehehehe. I would say the 28% at RT have indicated it for quite some days now.

Memoirs currently has a score of 55 at metacritic and 29% at RT, one of the biggest discrepencies of the year. Here are some other films that have scores around 55 at metacritic:
Flightplan - 53, 36%
Jarhead - 58, 58%
Mr. and Mrs. Smith - 55, 60%
Rent - 53, 49%
The Transporter 2 - 56, 50%
39 Pounds of Love - 56, 61%
Bee Season - 55, 43%
Breakfast on Pluto - 55, 51%

Many believe that Memoirs of a Geisha being showered with nominations is a given.....and it's not really the case.
I still believe at the very least it'll get one major nomination or two (acting probably) but...it's looking iffy, and it has been all year. you're kidding right?
hehehehe

That is the problem with Geisha. It doesn't get reviews that hate it (unlike Alexander last year), it is just that it completely lacks any enthusiasm whatsoever. There are no glowing reviews by any of the big names. Most reviews are just borderline good/bad.

I still think Williams will get a score nom for this one. I mean if anything, then it's score has been widely mentioned and it IS John Williams. I read that Munich's score was in trouble, so no nom there and I just don't see them giving it to Williams for ROTS, so that leaves him with Geisha.
Costume, Production Design and Make-Up noms should probably be in for it as well.
I also expect at least one acting nom.

It is not doing well AT ALL at IMDB:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0397535/
Even The Phantom of the Opera got 7.4/10 there, Syriana stands at 6.9/10 and Jarhead at 7.3/10

But Family Stone has 6.0. For a 30% RT movie, a 6.6 IMDb average is not bad, especially the percentage of 1's is for certain to be higher than what Jarhead and most other movies have.

Hmm, The Family Stone has an even higher percentage of 1's. I can imagine why.
Brokeback Mountain has almost exactly the same percentage of 1's as Geisha. That will prevent BM from ever getting a really high IMDB score. It is at 7.9/10 as of now. Walk the Line and Match Point both have better scores.

Dropped back to 29%. Movie Mom at Yahoo movies did give it an A-.
EDIT: also finally a score of 83 appears at metacritic, by Seattle Post's writer.

Collectively teenage girls have the worst taste in entertainment, the Backstreet Boys...them liking something is a sufefire sign its sucks ass.
My gender starts off, we enter the sucks years and then post college we get better, w dragged down during the college years by the incredibly stupid (like Miss let me trip for 5 guys nad have hte pictures posted on the internet).
Phantom was god awful, and I love the play, it felt a play being filmed, it was just so boring.

Dunno if this has been posted, but: Geisha 'unanimously praised' in Tokyo. Kinda interesting read at any rate.

Sounds good to me. Should bode for nice WoM and a long run in Japan after a somewhat disappointing $2 million opening.
By the way, xiayun's article on Geisha's Oscar chances is pretty much spot on with what I am thinking, except that I think Gong Li has a better chance at a nom than Zhang Ziyi.

You know what's funny? The film may end up with the same number of nominations with this kind of atrocious reviews as it may have gotten with good reviews (65-70%).

Terue, it's just that the bad reviews threaten the acting noms.
I am still thinking that either Ziyi or Li will make the cut.

Eh. Even though I thought they were both great, I think niether Zhang and Gong Li will get nominated for Oscars. (kinda want to see it happen for Li, though.)

I think one will get it.
As of now I see the following:
Best Costumes
Best Art Direction
Best Cinematography
Best Score
Best Supporting Actress

From Corliss:
Quote: - 9 - Memoirs of a Geisha
This adaptation of Arthur Golden’s best-seller baby-stepped onscreen with high hopes and big hype (including a cover story I wrote for TIME Asia). On opening day, the smarter critics slapped Geisha out of its reverie, and no one knows if the Motion Picture Academy members, for whom it was made, will ignore the reviews and give it lots of Oscar nominations. But as one of the movie’s admirers, I’m sticking to my story: that this far-East fairy tale, about the geisha Cinderella (Zhang Ziyi), her wicked stepsister (Gong Li), her fairy godmother (Michelle Yeoh) and the faraway prince (Ken Watanabe) she dreams of, is a delicate, robust and emotionally satisfying throwback to the sweeping romances Hollywood once specialized in and now mostly ignores. Its visual splendor never obscures the furtive, assertive heart beating under the kimono. I loved seeing most of my favorite Chinese actresses in one movie (even if they were turning Japanese), and watching Gong Li stride away with her first big English-language picture. As the vindictive Hatsumomo, the Gongster flashes a stiletto stare that can burn in passion or turn on a rival with Freon fury. Those are pleasures enough for this unapologetic reviewer.
Where is his damn formal review?! I was looking forward it to be counted at RT and metacritic all along.

I hope Li does. I thought she was better than Ziyi in Geisha. Plus, if its not already apparent, I'm obsessed with her.
Xia? When do you think we should aim to have a week-long festival for her? Late Jan.?

On a none-Oscar related note, Memoirs just jumped back up to 29%. It was 27% with exact 100 reviews a few hours ago. Now 6 new reviews are counted, and 4 of them are fresh. The average rating is also up 0.1 to 5.3.

So how many noms are we looking at here?
I am thinking Costumes, Score, Art Direction and one acting nom.
