It's almost hard for me to personally fathom people think Tom Hardy's Snidely Whiplash-esque performance is better than DiCaprio's.

But what do I know.

I agree, i was not impressed with Hardy's performance at all.

None of the other Best Actor nominees are that great this year, so I say just give DiCaprio the damn Oscar and get it over with. I don't think DiCaprio is that great of an actor, so I don't think he should win until he gives a fantastic performance. I believe he is getting this because of public pressure and the hard shoot.

It's arguably one of the weakest Best Actor lineups in years, for sure.

:noway:

I'm not aware of what was the competition those years, but in each of the following his performance is easily worth an Oscar.

What's Eating Gilbert Grape
The Basketball Diaries
Romeo + Juliet
Titanic
Catch Me If You Can
Gangs of New York
The Aviator
Shutter Island
The Great Gatsby
The Wolf of Wall Street

lol Titanic

You're a DiCaprio fan boy.

The only great performance he's ever given was for What's Eating Gilbert Grape. The rest are just better-than-average movie performances. People confuse being in a great film with giving a great performance. Leo has been in great films.

What has made DiCaprio great so far, is perhaps the hunt for an Oscar. Imagine he did win for Gilbert Grape, his first nom I believe. He might not have had the passion he's put in all his roles afterwards.

Yes ive heard people say that this isnt really one of DiCaprio's best etc but I dont think the tide is turning. Infact - he still gives an oscar worthy performance.

In general, most people dont care about the Oscars anyway.

Just give him the oscar that he is indeed long overdue and let him move on to other juicy roles like Devil in White City if that ever gets made.

I think DiCaprio is an amazing actor, but with all the suffering and slobbering, he still does not gie an Oscar-worthy performance in this one. Fassbender is leagues ahead of him this time.

Leo is a decent actor, but quite limited. In my opinion, his only Oscar worthy performance was in What's Eating Gilbert Grape. Every other performance, while fine, is just standard acting. It is not above-and-beyond; which is what is expected in order to win Oscars. I don't ever see DiCaprio lose himself in a role. Django Unchained was probably the closest to when he has, but that was a supporting role and still nowhere near the level that is required. For me, he is just DiCaprio in most movies. I really, really hope he doesn't win this year. Not because I dislike DiCaprio - he's fine enough and I don't ever have a bad time watching his movies. But I don't believe your surroundings ("tough shoot") should warrant an Oscar win. I also don't believe in getting Oscars for an accumulation of past performances. A single performance should warrant the statuette, and by all accounts his performance in The Revenant is not good enough. He should play a paraplegic or make a film about the Holocaust.

The two performances aren't that comparable. Fassbender is all big speeches, which become somewhat redundant as they continuously happen throughout the film. DiCaprio gives a mostly silent performance which has clear beats and peaks as the film moves along. Both actors have done better work.

It's a retarded thing to say that two performances are not comparable. They are in the same category, so they are comparable.

I guess it depends on what kind of acting you want.

I rare instance that I agree with you, though despite all hope, he will win. It's a done deal.

I suggest he plays paraplegic during Holocaust, but he has got to go gay too at the same time.

The bolded sentence is pretty much everything that is wrong about the Oscars. Anyone saying that he should get one now mainly because he is overdue should go fuck themselves.

Good acting suffices.

Or "Most Acting" as would be the case with Fassbender.

Is a Matt Damon upset possible? He doesn't have the same "he's due" storyline, but has been around, making great movies as long as Leo has. He carries The Martian, while Leo is arguably overshadowed by Tom Hardy and the bear.

Steve Carrell could fit that role too ... If he was nominated. That's also the main reason I don't see Big Short taking home the top prizes.
