 Re: Oscars In Memoriam Montage
Her death is even later than Hoffman's, but Shirley Temple might be the one person who could rival O'Toole for the final spot.

For real. Shirly Temple was a child star. O'Toole was an acting LEGEND.

I don't think magnus or Chippy comprehend the scope of Shirley Temple's impact on the movie industry.

That depends on what you classify as "impact".

Temple has an honorary Oscar, I believe.

 Re: Oscars In Memoriam Montage
This reminds me of the Disney's most popular animated film ever among all audiences thread. It must be almost impossible to think of the fullness of history when you're 15 years old. ...and speaking of juvenile, Shirley Temple was the first recipient of the Academy Juvenile Award in 1935.

 Re: Oscars In Memoriam Montage
She owned the industry during the depression. And then went away.
O'Toole has had a far bigger impact, IMO.

 Re: Oscars In Memoriam Montage
The reason I believe Shirley Temple could end the montage has nothing to do with her acting, though she was an adorable child star with solid song-and-dance flair and did well within the limited context of the vehicles put together to showcase her. Rather, it is because of her enormous and sentimental place within the fabric of American popular culture. She is the ultimate image of spreading cinematic joy and magic during the Depression. She is also the ultimate child star and, by extension, a paragon of how we imagine ourselves at our purest. If one were creating a montage of national cinematic and musical legends of the 20th century, footage of her could easily hold court alongside Fred Astaire, Charlie Chaplin, James Dean, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, and John Wayne. So, I do believe she is on a level of pop-culture significance denied even to Peter O'Toole, despite his impeccable Shakespearean credentials, Lawrence of Arabia, The Lion in Winter, The Ruling Class, etc.
It is not hard for me to imagine a montage closer showing her transition from Bright Eyes starlet to the elegant older lady accepting lifetime-achievement awards to tremendous standing ovations.

 Re: Oscars In Memoriam Montage
So it ended up being Philip Seymour Hoffman. O'Toole was slipped into the middle.

 Re: Oscars In Memoriam Montage
Yeah I was a little surprised about that, but it isn't a big deal. I also noticed they didn't really skip many big names other than Jonathan Winters and Jack Klugman. But they are both more better known for TV
