Gunslinger wrote: If people weren't taking Jason Reitman seriously before, they certainly should now. Not only is Up in the Air receiving -rave- reviews, but many of them are regarding it as "a Jason Reitman film" (rather than a George Clooney vehicle) and praising him for capturing the magic of Billy Wilder, James L. Brooks, and Cameron Crowe in their primes.
Besides, he's previously nominated. And Juno didn't exactly scream "DIRECTOR OSCAR!" He's young, but he's respected and he's clearly made one of the most important films of his career with Up in the Air. He's in. one of three

You're being overly confident on Up in the Air. Retiman has a shot but I'm betting that there's some more seirous fare out there with more proven directors that are likely to get in instead.

I think that Kathryn Bigelow and Quentin Tarantino are the frontrunners.

Re: Well...the Best Director 2009 Discussion Thread - NEW POLL
after seeing Invictus, I can't imagine even a guy like Eastwood getting in for it. His work here is far less impressive than it was in all of his recent nominations. That said, he's still my #6 at the moment.
1. Kathryn Bigelow - The Hurt Locker 2. Quentin Tarantino - Inglourious Basterds 3. James Cameron - Avatar 4. Jason Reitman - Up in the Air 5. Lee Daniels - Precious
I don't see any film winning both BP and BD, and if Up in the Air's gonna win one, it'll be BP. Director's gonna go to the woman, the overdue, or the gamechanger.

I have no doubt in my mind that JC will win BD for avatar, the direction throughout the entire film is amazing.
