ANYWAYS, these "changes" sound fishy. they talk and talk and talk, hoping we'll watch and watch and watch. and then nothing much is different at all. good thing no one will be watching to notice.

Re: Changes For The Oscars (Jackman Speaks, Queen Latifah Sings)
Some stars are officially being asked not to walk the red carpet and instead enter the Kodak through a backdoor, all in an attempt to reveal their dresses on stage and boost ratings? http://theenvelope.latimes.com/awards/o ... 4841.story

Re: Changes For The Oscars (Jackman Speaks, Queen Latifah Sings)
Some stars who don't like the red carpet do skip it but for them to ask specific people not to walk the red carpet seems odd.
Less pictures of stars on red carpet = less pictures and coverage about Oscars the next day.
I wonder if the Academy are starting to think they made a mistake with Laurence Mark and Bill Condon.

Stupidest thing I have ever heard. Can't believe it's actually materializing. I really think that move, in the end, will cost them more viewers than they will gain.

And I'm not at all sold on Hugh Jackman either. To Loyal, that's the show-saver. To me, that's the icing on an already piled-high shitcake. I haven't seen the Tony Awards he hosted because I'm straight, so let's hope these amazing performances he pulled off hosting the Tonys will translate to the Oscars, a totally straight-man's award show.

Quote: 81st Academy Awards® Trailer Set to Premiere
Beverly Hills, CA (RushPRnews) 02/12/09 Oscar®-nominated writer-director John Singleton has directed the trailer promoting the 81st Academy Awards®, Academy President Sid Ganis announced today. Featuring Oscar telecast host Hugh Jackman, the trailers will run in more than 11,000 theaters around the country beginning Friday, February 13.
“The Oscars are a worldwide phenomenon,†said Ganis. “I’m thrilled that John could work with us to create a powerful spot that will whet movie lovers appetites for a terrific show.†I hope it shows Hugh Jackman drinking milk and running down an alley in south central LA.

The In Memoriam is for the ones that left, thus the music has to be less intrusive. I'm there not to hear someone singing, but to pay respect to the dead.

They should have nominated both and seen a financial/ratings bonanza, as well as rewarding non-mediocre craftsman filmmaking. That's all it's about anyway.

Re: Oscar Changes (Peter Gabriel Sledgehammers The Oscars)
Quote: Although the specific plans are heavily under wraps, the physical relationships of the audience to the stage, and the stars to one another, are being radically altered. The biggest change involves reimagining some of the seating arrangements in concert with redesigning the landscape of the stage, including a new, curvaceous thrust. The novel new topography will allow more interesting camera work and more varied and streamlined entrances and exits. “It’s the nominees’ and performers’ night, and David has physicalized that idea,†Mr. Condon said. “It’s not putting people in a traditional theater, where you’re looking at the back of someone’s head.†Quote: Mr. Rockwell began the design process by studying “the physical engine of the show,†especially the transitions between segments. He noticed that in many ceremonies the sets were “one world composed of static hard elements† for instance, 20 monumental interlocking Art Deco arches. This year scene and prop changes will unfold before the audience.
In addition the orchestra had “become a moat between the audience and the stage,†Mr. Rockwell said. Musicians this year will reside onstage fostering what Mr. Mark calls “the communal party experience.â€Â
Mr. Rockwell will also use the power of suggestion, as Mr. Champion did, rather than literal period imagery. LED screens behind the presenters will allow light to be used as a visual sensation, filtering through silver-rope curtains, strands of silver-leaf balls, fabric and other materials.
Screens will also appear in unlikely places. In the presentation on film editing, for example, LED screens will be deployed in a kinetic, architectural way. Nineteen of them, each with a different film image, will “fly dimensionally in space,†Mr. Rockwell said, an experience meant to suggest “being in the mind of someone editing." Quote: This year the dominant color scheme will shift from red to a rich, deep blue, a shade inspired by Joseph Urban, the prolific stage designer of opera and the Ziegfeld Follies. Mr. Rockwell will also exploit some tricks he designed into the Kodak. Fluted crystal chandeliers will hover above the audience to give the impression  presto!  of a low-ceiling nightclub.
Mr. Rockwell has been frenetically making the rounds of set-fabrication warehouses, distinctly unglamorous places where the near-asphyxiating scent of solvents mingles with sawdust. in Mr. Condon’s office he sketched madly as the choreographer, Fatima Robinson, outlined her vision for the best original song. (Much toe-tapping all around.) Later he unveiled the latest blue-lit model of the set to Mr. Condon, who exuded: “Wow! Oh, my God! This doesn’t look like an Oscar set!†(It was a compliment.)

I like how the low the stage is. I also like how the close the awards podium is to the seating area.
I really like the new set and seating. These are good changes.

I really like the new set and seating. These are good changes. I agree. As much as people are complaining about things, I REALLY like the physical set changes and the planning of the whole logistics of the show that is going on. It's creating a far more interesting, intimate set up. The orchestra on stage makes total sense and I think is an excellent idea. It is far better than hiding them under the stage. The orchestra becomes part of the glamour. The hovering chandeliers is a great idea, as well, to add to the warmth of the show. And all the talk about the use of LED screens sounds interesting, even if I don't totally get what they mean. All in all, I'm very impressed by the producers this year. I really think they are mostly moving in the right direction in trying to make the show more intimate, glamorous and fun, and ultimately more spontaneous and less staged. A lot of the changes are good changes. And Hugh Jackman strikes me as a great choice, mostly because of Jackman's comments on aiming to be an MC, someone who keeps the show flowing and works on the spot, as opposed to a stiff "host". I think that's a good philosophy to be going with. And Jackman just strikes me as someone who can have fun with, not just poke fun at, celebrities. Really, the only downer for me with the whole set up of this years Oscars are the actual nominees. Imagine how exciting and "big" this year would be if we had The Dark Knight and Wall-E among the nominees, ALONG with these great producers and technical decisions that seem to point to a well-run, glamorous show? I mean, the advertisements are talking about how the Oscars are the biggest movie event of the year, and the progressive decisions regarding production of the actual show point to a great one. But the nominees don't seem to jive with the rest of this. And I find it disappointing, because this year's show lost the great potential it really had, I think, in boosting the Oscars. It seems inevitable to me that the producers will be blamed for low ratings, when in reality, I think the Academy should be blamed. Meh. Peace, Mike
