Ooh no way. Absolutely love Sideways. It should have won.

Outright dislike? Very few actually.

Good Night, and Good Luck - I'm pretty indifferent towards that. It's a flat C-grade and the worst BP nominee of the 2000s that I have seen. It might not be "bad" per sé and I certainly ee its technical qualities, but I was neither blown away by Strathairn, nor by the storytelling. It just left me really cold and shrugging.

Traffic - probably THE most overrated BP nominee of the decade and the epitome of Soderbergh-overratedness. It's something around C+. Acting is strong, but the screenplay is a mess. It tries too hard.

Good Will Hunting - okay, I HATE that one. Really hate, not just dislike. A retarded film. Put me off Van Sant for good probably.

The Exorcist - Yeah, I dislike it quite a bit. Laughable film.

Gigi - not terrible, but most likely the worst BP winner I have seen. Such a mellow and shallow musical ended up with 9 Oscars? My goodness.

I actually think that's pretty much it.

ABM was well done, I thought.

Maybe I was really taken by Crowe's performance (Denzel should've won in '00 instead of Crowe...and Crowe should've won in '01 instead of Denzel)...but I think schizophrenia is a rougher topic to portray...and for that movie to click worldwide, when it's really just about a loony mathematician? Even more impressive.

Except for the Denzel instead of Spacey part, I agree about everything else there. It's actually among the better biopics and it's a better turn by Crowe than in Gladiator.

Traffic's a mess, though it's not a terrible film.

Before Sunset is pure crap, even bigger than Before Sunrise.

And for pictures in the last 10 years that didn't deserve to be BP material (not necesarily bad, just not good enough or overrated):
The Full Monty
Chocolat
Gosford Park
Lost in Translation
Sideways
Babel

The Towering Inferno. It was a tacky and hilarious movie. But it was baaaad. And people say The Dark Knight was not a good enough BP nominee.

What else? I can't think of anything else at the moment.

Every nominee I've seen have been "passable" to "great."

Huh? Those are like the 3 best BP nominees of the last decade.

That applies to most I have seen as well.

I think Good Will Hunting and The Exorcist are the only ones I harbor deep dislike towards.

Sideways was NOT the best movie of its year...but it was the best actual nominee of its crop. I wouldn't probably have nominated it for BP, but I would have rather than the other four. Finding Neverland? C'mon.

I never saw it but Chocalat gets a bad rap.

I liked Lost in Translation so cant complain there.

Most of the 1996 crop were probably not deserving (weakest BP group ever??) but I guess not alot to choose from.

Oh gosh.

Shine.

*shudders*

Actually, I'm just miffed that Geoffrey Rush got so much love for that. I thought the younger actor gave the better performance.

SHINE!

Best movie about mental illness ever. Does Awakenings count as mental illiness? Probably not.

Slumdog Millionaire is close, but I can't help but think that a lot of my steam towards the film is because I found the film to be merely good while others find it amazing.

Clockwork Orange kinda counts, though.

Master & Commander is one of the most BORING BP nominees I have seen.

However, I can't deny that it was really masterfully made in most places. I loved the opening and the finish.

I must be on of the few who really liked Goodnight and Goodluck.

Not to mention, LOTR:FOTR couldn't win (imagine the backlash if The Two Towers was crap?), Moulin Rouge! was polarizing, and Gosford Park and In the Bedroom didn't deserve financing from the get-go.

Crowe should have won in '00 for The Insider.

Gosford Park would've been my winner in '01.

And Howard winning over Altman was nothing less than a crime.

No argument there. I think the Academy got too carried away with that one.

I like to add Forrest Gump on the list. The character is stereotypically southern and dumb. He just has no sympathy.
