I thought Eddie Murphy was fantastic, and the music deserved a win. But I think Eddie screwed himself over and Jennifer was overrated. Am I not allowed an opinion? Christ.

Judging from this pic, he just shaved his head, porbably for The Bucket List (His next film).

Well yeah, obviously he just shaved his head. He looks scary though.

Without sounding cruel, I think it's almost fitting that Eddie Murphy had his Oscar taken from him for signing on to do another really shitty movie for the bucks. A minor form of karma. That's what you get for releasing Norbit and all your other crap like Pluto Nash and Daddy Day Care to the world, hehe. But honestly I haven't seen Dreamgirls yet, so I can't judge whether he deserved it or not.

I dont have the info in front of me but is it possible Oscar ballots were beginning to be submitted prior to Norbit's release? I'm not discounting a link but I'm not sold either.

The deadline I believe was last Monday...Maybe even a little later than that...And from what I read most members wait until very close to the deadline, in order to see many of the smaller films they may have overlooked.

Ballots arrived right when voters were seeing ads featuring Edie Murphy running around in a fatsuit and yellowface. Not good publicity.

How did I just know this guy would update his godly site just about instantly: http://www.filmsite.org/aa06.html

I guess when you get to update your site twice a year, you might as well get it done quickly. It makes me feel a bit gooey seeing The Departed enter the history pages now like that, sitting right along the others. Good job academy.

That was the most deserved win of the evening, along with Scorsese's. Some people here are just laughable. Haha, french man.

yeah. great. im stoopid. hilarious. I don't care how deserving it was, it took almost FOUR minutes. I felt emotion sure. But it just ran too long, and felt even longer.

Four minutes is death at the Oscars. Anyone can attest to that.

And wow, it's pretty easy to laugh at someone because of their age isn't it? From behind a computer thousands of miles away. Impressive.

If four minutes on a TV show is already too long to honor an awesome career that spans about 5 decades, then that's indeed "death".

I'm not laughing at you because of your age, but because of your short attention span. Flying a few thousands miles just to do so in front of you isn't worth my time though, so I'd rather do it right here.

I thought 4 minutes for the honorary Oscar was actually really good timing. Doesn't it normally go on much longer and has the potential to be a lot more boring? At least Eastwood made this one funny. And this honorary Oscar was a very deserving one too.

I generally never like to complain about Oscar timing. For me, the longer the show the better. I love the Oscars, and want tons of Oscar stuff to fill my junky need for Oscars every year. Heh.

Peace,
Mike.

Likes:

The Departed & Scorsese
Ellen (again, not gut-busting or anything, but still funny; I still feel like every year, though, they almost don't get enough time on stage to actually be as funny as they can be)
The shadow dancers
The funny Will Ferrell thing
The REALLY funny Clint Eastwood translating for the honoree
The Dreamgirls numbers
The Babel score win

Dislikes:

Happy Feet? Honestly?
"The Oscars have turned Green"
No real great speeches
No Whitaker upset
The "look back in American film" thing and other such time fillers

A good night, though, overall. Not the best telecast I've seen, but not a lot to complain about.

Scorsese finally winning.
The Departed winning.
Ellen Degeneres - best host in awhile.
Dreamgirls being shutout in the song category right after performing the three numbers. That was hilarious. The film got what it deserved in the end.
Alan Arkin winning over Eddie Murphy. Norbit came at the worst possible time and I couldn't be happier.
The Jack Black/Will Ferrell number.

Lukewarm

Pan's Labyrinth losing out. I liked the film, but I'm kind of glad it didn't win.
Little Miss Sunshine losing out. My favorite film of the year tied with The Departed. I'm disappointed that it lost, but I'm also happy it lost.

Dislikes

The 225 minute running time.
Jennifer Hudson beating Abigail Breslin
Happy (An Inconvenient Truth) Feet winning best animated film.
The shadowdancers - Where was The Queen one? Can't pull off a British lady? Not impressed.
The special effects choir
The Al Gore asskissing.

I liked this show. Laura is a great producer.

Ellen was great, she deserves a second chance. The Will Ferrall song and the Shadow dancers were a delight too. My favorite moment though was when Coppola and Speilberg dissed Lucas. That had me on the floor.

What I did like was that I got most of the winners wrong (I didn't win any contest).

On the side note, is it me or does the set look like Sale of the Century.

I guess I'm the only one who thought Ellen DeGeneres was nerve grating? Maybe not quite Billy Crystal bad, but I didn't smile once at her antics. That said, there was a lot to like about the show, particularly the silihouttes and all the awards going to the right places(Best Supporting Actor and CoM's cinematography snub aside)

I thought it was an awesome show. Among the best to my memory (remember I've only been watching for 6 or so years).

-Ellen was great. I agree it wasn't fall on the floor laughs but that myspace picture bit was one of the evening's highlights.

-It flowed really well and kept the entertainment value pretty high all throughout with rarely a slump that msot would say was the "boring" part. The only thing I could have done without, that made no sense, and did slow things down was that America tribute. And those shadow people thing was sooo cool and brilliant.

-Loved the Ennio Morricone thing. Wasn't too long, was well deserved, and was both a bit funny and heartwarming (especially at the end with his wife)

-The Departed taking Picture and 4 oscars was great. just sweet. And of course the standing ovation for Marty was spectacular.

-The upset denying Eddie Murphy an Oscar was PRICELESS!!!!!!! Love it love it loved it.

-Overall, I think there were ALOT of surprises. Pan's winning early 3 (art direction and cinematography...whoa) and then losing foriegn film, sheesh. Happy Feet and Babel Score were some upsets as well.

-I took so much joy in seeing Melissa Ethridge win over the 3 Deamgirl songs.

-And I absolutely loved how the biggest star of the night (well, most part of the night) was Al Gore. Anything Al Gore related was nothing short of great. I just wish he actually received an Oscar as well.

-The only thing that would have REALLY made this year top notch was upsetting the Acting category. At least he had something to say this time, but I would have still loved to see either Leo or O'Toole win.

-There weren't too many stad outs in the fashion department this year. Penelope looked really good and alot of others just looked great but no one was wow. And I can't believe I'm saying it but I really loved what Helen Mirren was wearing (she gets my best dressed vote).

-I do think that last year's stage design was absolutely magnificent and this year's didn't quite live up, but that's a small complaint.

I thought it was a good show. The fact that my favorite film want the big one aside, I didn't think it was a boring show this year. Ellen was decent. Her opening sucked, but she progressively got better throughout with the screenplay thing with Scorsese and MySpace picture with Clint Eastwood. The Will Ferrell/Jack Black/John C. Reilly introduction was AWESOME.

My 2 cents:

Pro:
- The Lives of Others winning best foreign pic
- Forest Whitaker getting best actor (and I like O'Toole too)
- Scorsese finally getting best director (not his best movie, but still)
- Ennio's tribute (although they should have included the music for Once Upon a Time in the West)

So-so:
- I like montages and felt they should have included some more
- The shadow dancers (interesting at first, but sort of meh)

Contra:
- DeGeneres (not quite Letterman bad but coming close; bring back Crystal or Martin)
- the nominated songs this year (all crap, and that Dreamgirls performance with everyone trying to outscream the other)
- Santaolalla winning again for best score (I think he was actually the least deserving of all the nominees)
- 'The oscars are going green'...yeah right, and let's hop into my 300' feet long limo afterwards to bring me to the airport where my private plane will bring me to the hippest party with millions of lightbulbs on. Cut the hypocrisy.

The Will Ferrell and co song kicked ass.

COM was robbed for Cinematography.

Im glad Arkin beat Murphy, though happy with the other acting wins.

Offcouse - The Departed and Scorsese won after all! Brilliant!!

and Cars was robbed!! Happy Feet is mediocre.

Did anyone else hate most of the speeches? Too much reading. The actors' speeches were not too good either. Alan Arkin was reading, although his win was a welcome surprise. Forest Whitaker was reading too, and even though it was an emotional speech, it wasn't particularly effective because of the reading. Helen Mirren's was atrocious, why the hell would someone go on about the queen as if she's this great woman or something? I didn't really like it at all. It sounded a bit cocky to me.(And I felt sorry for Kate again, even though I knew it wouldn't happen.) Jennifer Hudson's speech though, was surprisingly the most genuine of the actors and I liked that.(although I was rooting against her) But the speeches were all so terribly unimpressive.

Otherwise, the show was fun. Nice surprises. Loved the Ennio Morricone part. Wasn't particularly impressed with Ellen. The Departed!! Yey!
