Months old conversation piece but...
After seeing As Good As It Gets, I still think Little Miss Sunshine is still nearly unique in its nomination... AGAIG is a light comedy and film, but I don't think it is ever hilarious like LMS. I think Little Miss Sunshine is the first film in maybe decades to be nominated that would be counted in my books as a full-on laugher... I mean I don't lie when I say this, I laughed as much in LMS as I did in nearly any film this year.
Or maybe I just laughed harder than most at LMS and laughed less than most at Gets.

Not joining this but:
When I saw American Beauty again recently, it hit me how similar this was to that movie. Also, Little Miss Sunshine is the only "American" movie nominated for BP this year, which may help it a lot as well.

As hard it is for me to believe that a film like this could win best picture. I definitely don't believe departed can take it. and although i still think babel is in second place, i can also why THAT might not quite have what it takes to make it all the way.
I guess I'm in, then.

Well, here is my opinion.
Little Miss Sunshine is my favorite movie of 2006, and it is a little movie, and the academy likes big.
But then again, it won the SAG, WGA, and the PGA.
and also, from what I heard, Babel has haters from the Academy as well, and it bombed at the box office. Departed may be the biggest Box Office hit of the bunch, but I think it might be a little too violent for some women and older folk. I think those two demos that I mention will put LMS on their ballot (I bet the actors are too). And since the Babel lovers and Departed may cancel each other out....
....I am declaring right that Little Miss Sunshine will win best picture. So count me in.

But it was a remake of an Asian film.

Still, it was a Scorsese flick set in Boston with an all-American cast.

Little Miss Sunshine won't win. I don't know if this has ever been said before (I'm sure it has, lol), but the last time the winner of BP wasn't even nominated for BD was in 1989, with Driving Miss Daisy. Before that? I dunno, every BP winner from 1958 onwards was nominated for BD.
Don't mess with history.

This is such a craaaaaaaaaaazy year, though, that an argument could be made in favor of throwing out the history.
LMS probably wasn't nominated for Director only because there are two of them.

This club just gained a little steam.
