He has a point about the actress category though. It would have been nice to have included Joan Allen's performance in The Upside of Anger.

I finally got around to seeing that...and it wasn't very good, although I think Kevin Costner knocked it out of the park and is more than deserving of a nomination somewhere.

Scarlett needs to win GG to have any chance of swing some votes her way.

Keaton has zero precursors, yes. Indeed, she has recieved nothing. I'm just saying that, being Diane Keaton, she deserves the benefit of the doubt. She will get some votes. Will she be nominated? I sure as hell don't think so.

Scarlett's GG win isn't out of the question: see Natalie Portman. And the Globes love Scarlett, even if AMPAS and SAG have issues with her.

There's always a snub that makes me physically violent, and it was Dennis Quaid's in 2003. He had every presursor you could want, GG and SAG, and I think he won the New York Critics award. Plus, you know, he was FANTASTIC. The academy hated Far From Heaven. Just like Kinsey. And I suspect they will have similar feelings toward AHOV.

TH: Okay, yeah great. Sounds like fun, anything to support my film, I am really proud of...
BB: But there is one thing.
TH: Oh?
BB: Despite the fact that you have had the best year of nearly any actor and are in two of the SAG Ensemble films, we can't really nominate you for the Acting awards.
TH: ...oh, Okay well it's not really about awards, it's about having pride in my...
BB: Well frankly, you got enough votes, but we don't need another Jamie Foxx this year.
TH: Wait, what are you trying to say?
BB: Speak clearly son, I can't understand your street talk! Anyway, we need Russell Crowe. We need the publicity, he's bound to throw a phone at someone.
TH: ...
BB: I mean, seriously, we are going to need the ratings. Besides, we don't need any more racial issues. We are fair minded... hey we nominated Crash!

*FAMILY STONE and NORTH COUNTRY Spoilers (Although you shouldn't let just the latter stop you from reading this)*

Frances McDormand will probably be Oscar nominated. It'll be her what, fourth? No one gave her enough credit for, you know, dying of a terminal illness. How could we have been so blind?

That is Diane Keaton's problem: we don't actually see her suffer and wither away. Tsk, tsk.

I agree. But that wouldn´t have made it more unexpected than the Zhang nom.

Zhang's nom was not that unexpected. Yes, she didn't get good reviews but she's a respected foreign actress trying to breakout in Hollywood. That helps her a lot, especially in a weak category like this years Best Actress.

Hmmm... everyday this race gets more interesting!

Russel Crowe... man I hope he doesn't actually get the nom.
Eric Bana is slipping away. Having no critics awards, he really needed this. The last slot will be between Crowe and Howard.

Two Crash nominees in Supporting Actor and neither of them the best of the bunch, Terrence Howard! Well, at least we now the Crash support is there and isn't going away.

Best Actress is just fucked up this year.

Supporting Actress.... ehh I really don't see McDorman getting a nom, though I haven't seen the movie. I think Maria Bello can sneak in there if there is a support for Violence. If not, then it ma match up....??

Come onnnnnn 10am!!! ;)

I'm sure we'll all really excited for the DGA nods...but they'll probably be massively anti-climactic.

hehe. I agree. And chances are they'll throw the race into an even higher state of confusion! ;)

Jeez, you're telling me Hustle and Flow has a better ensemble cast then Munich? Give me a break.

- Charlize Theron over other great actresses?
- No Bello or Hurt?
- Hustle & Flow over Munich?
- And Hustle & Flow gets best ensemble, but no nom for Terrence Howard?

At least the good thing is that the SAG categories more often match the Oscars only 3/5 or 4/5, and very rarely 5/5.

PEACE, Mike.

Look, I love the hell out of Zhang Ziyi, but she did not deserve a best actress nomination for Memoirs. If you're going to nom her in something make it supporting actress for her superb turn in 2046 :nonono: . And Don frickin Cheadle over Terrence Howard for the supporting actor nomination? Get real.

Munich deserved the ensemble, as every single role in that film is played to perfection.

King Kong now seems to be dead after these guild noms the last two days and that sucks.

I'm not sure why everyone is so shocked Maria Bello didn't get a nomination, she probably split between lead and supporting. The exact same thing happened to Jennifer Connelly at a few award shows, and she won the Oscar.

Don Cheadle? Are they joking?

And yeah, I'm not one to bag on Zhang Ziyi, I like her, but man. Not deserving.

Jennifer Connelly was actually nominated for SAG in the lead category though. I think Portman is a better example for comparison. Bello will be nominated. However, I believe Michelle Williams will win both SAG and Oscar quite confortably.

SAG can be a good indicator but it can also miss it completely. Remember when Marcia Gay Harden didn't even get a SAG or a GG nom. and went on to win the supporting actress Oscar for Pollack?

As I've said before, I think this year's actress award will be similar to a couple of year's ago. Samantha Morton and Keisha Castle-Hughes were both surprise nominees over Jennifer Connelly and Nicole Kidman. I doubt both Theron and Ziyi can both make the final five. Watts, Knightley, Allen, and even Laura Linney could pull a major upset. Linney would be a shocker because of category confusion but it was the same situation with Morton in In America. Plus, she also had a surprise hit with The Exorcism of Emily Rose.

Weird nominations, but this is a great year. Last year was so uninteresting, so at least we're getting some spark this year.

Go Crash, Don Cheadle, Matt Dillion, Reese, Joaquin and Rachel.

lol go say that when the Oscar noms are announced! ;)

While she might not be nominated in any other year, in her defense, she carried Pride and Prejudice on her shoulders, and that alone *might* be enough for a nomination in this sad year. The same can't be said to say, Zhang Ziyi.

Pretty much how i see it, with the exception that Crowe still seems like a long shot for me. I don't know why, the movie just passed so quietly.

Quote:
Actress:
Judi Dench, Mrs. Hendersen Presents
Felicity Huffman, Transamerica
Charlize Theron, North Country
Reese Witherspoon, Walk the Line
Ziyi Zhang, Memoirs of a Geisha

Ugh. Wacky line-up. Dench was good in Henderson, but the movie itself was of mediocre quality, which doesn't bode well for her. Ziyi, mediocre in a mediocre movie. Knightly, where? Theron is coming out of nowehere. Only surefire nominations are Huffman and Witherspoon. Consistently mentioned all year. There will still be some big surprises to this list by the time the biggies come out.

Quote:
Supporting Actor:
Don Cheadle, Crash
George Clooney, Syriana
Matt Dillon, Crash
Paul Giamatti, Cinderella Man
Jake Gyllenhaal, Brokeback Mountain

Ok. Except for Giamatti, these all feel random to me. They could change easily. This is rough. Where's Hurt? :-(

Quote:
Supporting Actress:
Amy Adams, Junebug
Catherine Keener, Capote
Frances McDromand, North Country
Rachel Weisz, Constant Gardener
Michelle Williams, Brokeback Mountain

Yay! Adams is back in the running. Boo, Gong Li is officially out of the contest. I see Keener (toldcha) and Williams being sure things along with Adams, the other two still seem up in the air. Though I'm tough pressed to see who would replace outside of maybe Bello (if she's not running in leading role) and Johansen, etc.

Quote:
Ensemble:
Brokeback Mountain
Capote
Crash
Good Night, and Good Luck.
Hustle & Flow

I wouldn't call Capote ensemble. It only had three main people. Two really. Good Night is a clear winner here.

Hustle and Flow had a powerful cast. Top notch.
I think it would be just about on par with Munich.

Those acting nominations aren't bizarre... they're retarded. Maybe people like andaroo are freaking out at the "crappiness" of the films released in 05 because these groups keep nominating some of the worst points of some of the most average movies. 2005 was not this bad. It's these awards that I think lack any bit of inspiration. If they aren't "safe bets", they seem to be random and undeserved. It's like this is a fundraiser or publicity stunt, not a real SAG show!
