The only IFP nomination the Woodman ever got was a screenplay nod for Bullets Over Broadway. So......

I don't think the lack of Match Point means anything. Indeed, these awards don't really have much, if any, effect on the Oscars, except for existing as a place to reward the movies Oscar won't touch.

I think Woody is now considered by many to be 'part of the establishment,' which is especially ridiculous considering that Match Point was truly independent; he could find no studio to directly finance it.

This is the first I've heard of Three Burials in a while (pretty much since Cannes). I'm wondering what its chances are for Oscar attention.

It's possible that most of the ISA folks didn't even see Match Point.

I don't think Three Burials has any real shot anywhere. One night, its buzz just suddenly died. Like that wrestler guy.

It's because most people still haven't forgotten US Marshalls.

LOL

Since US Marshals came out, Tommy Lee Jones has appeared in:
Small Soldiers
Double Jeopardy
Rules of Engagement
Space Cowboys
Men In Black II
The Hunted
The Missing
Man of The House

That's one pretty solid movie and some of the worst crap the new century has had to throw at us. He's lucky anybody even returns his calls at this point.

I guess it's only natural, but it does seem as though picking nominees so early in the game caters a bit to those already in release (and also to the bigger profile indies that have yet to be released, a la Brokeback). I mean, The Squid and the Whale was well received but definitely no indie smash.

Good to see the Junebug attention, though.

Which one is solid?

Cate was good in The Missing but Tommy wasn't!

I thought Space Cowboys was delightful cheese, made by a group of people clearly having a lot of fun. Plus, I've seen it a few times, and it's always enjoyable. Far better than it has any right to be, mostly due to the cast.

The Missing was a major disappointment, but I agree: Cate was good.

Sometimes I wonder if Clint Eastwood was all like...

"Fuck this Space Cowboys shit, I'm going to get me some frickin' Oscars. I'm no longer going to make pathetic movies with my geriatric friends."

Space Cowboys was well received.

I, for one, am very happy to see The Squid and the Whale did well here. It deserves them, and I don't think box office should factor into any of the decisions because the award is supposed to give small films more exposure.

I think the reason for absence of Match Point is probably due to few in the panel have seen it.

Did Eastwood make Blood Work before or after Space Cowboys? I don't remember anymore :(

Funnily enough M$B and Mystic River actually made more than Space Cowboys, heh.

Blood Work was awful. I think that's what made him seek penance in the form of making good, thoughtful, award-worthy movies.

Even if I thought Mystic River was more than a little overrated.

No. I think impact will though. Which is why I'm expecting Brokeback Mountain or Good Night.

The cynical side of me says that they will make a big deal out of these two because these are the two the general audience watchign the show will be most familiar with.

The IFP always reward the 'major' independent film with the important awards. The one that's made a big splash with awards, money, or both.
2005-Sideways
2004-Lost In Translation
2003- Far From Heaven
2002-Memento
2001-Crouching Tiger

What a shame.

I mean, I could handle Mannequin getting an Oscar nod... but... :|

PH's Best Visual Effects nom was more than deserved. In that year three movies with toms of the best effects ever were nominated. Pearl Harbor, A.I. and FOTR. I think FOTR's were the worst of the three. I really didn't like A.I., but I think its visual effects were astonishing and deserved to win. The imagery of the flooded New York....amazing.
