Re: There Will Be Blood Oscars thread
It seems like all of this year's serious Oscar fare features at least one very funny scene. TWBB has the baptism, No Country has the swimming dog scene (I laughed SO hard during that one), Sweeney Todd has the Sacha Baron Cohen entrance scene, Into the Wild has the scenes with Vince Vaughn, etc...

The screener leaked today btw. It is what it is. Yes, that is exactly the scene I had in mind. Also, your avatar signals to the most memorable line I took away from the movie. I LOVE IT! Sometimes I just randomly go up to my brother (with whom I saw it originally) and yell "I drink your milkshake." ... Yes, I know.

The screener leaked today btw. It is what it is. schwing! Floodgates are open for a good quality No Country and Atonement too now I'm embarassingly behind on the Oscar films. I haven't been to the city since Michael Clayton's opening weekend, it's been hell.

The screener leaked today btw. It is what it is. Guys, DO NOT DOWNLOAD THE SCREENER IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE MOVIEIt is out of sync and cuts off the last thirty seconds, arguably the most important thirty seconds in the entire film. Nah, loyal. People are saying that scenes are in different orders, like it's a workprint or something. Did you watch the whole thing, and does it match with the script line-for-line? Cuz I really wanna watch it again...

Re: There Will Be Blood Oscars thread
I still for the life of me can't see this getting a nomination. It looks so...out there It is a December released. It missed out on both a screenplay and a directing nomination at the Globes. But more importantly it is a December release. All the previous December nominees (since the Oscars were moved up) have been films with established names behind them going into the race (ROTK and EastWood/Spieldberg films). But more importantly...it still looks WAY out there. I have not seen the film so maybe I should before saying anything else...but...when its nomination for best picture is announced..THEN I'll believe it.

I guess that is enough. : ) It'd also be the most raved about movie not to be nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars in, like, 15 years or so. Or more.

Re: There Will Be Blood Oscars thread
I don't know. I wouldn't say it is more acclaimed than something like ETernal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and ESPECIALLY Far From Heaven (and even Before Sunset). Depends on what you go by, but the only place TWBB has done better is its MetaCritic score.

Moreover, it did very very well on Critics Top 10 lists. NCFOM is the only reason why TWBB is not #1 at criticstop10.com this year.

Re: There Will Be Blood Oscars thread
Far From Heaven was easily the best reviewed movie the year it came out (when taking only reviews into account the only place where There Will Be Blood has done better than FFH is Metacritic). It would not, by any means be the best reviewed movie to miss out on best pic. ETernal Sunshine was up against the better reviewed (than Blood) Sideways and it still managed to almost match Sideways' in number of top 10 rankings and if I remember correctly, actually ended up with more #1 rankings that year. Either way, you're not gonna convince me so we might as well put this discussion on hold til Jan 22

The comparisons are flawed, Rod, flawed! : )
Neither Eternal Sunshine, nor FFH managed to get a DGA nom and FFH actually missed even a Golden Globe BP nom! Also, neither had such great support by the guilds overall.

You mentioned it would be the best film reviewed in ages to miss out on a best picture nomination and i was addressing that only. Another comparison would be Almost famous, which actually did get a screenplay nomination at the globes. i should see it first, though...i dont know if its playing here yet. i have no doubt that i'll probably like or even love it the onyl thing i remain unconvinced about is its chances at a best picture nomination. if i see it before jan 22 i'll get back to you two, but until then...

Re: There Will Be Blood Oscars thread
The critic rave is one thing, but it's also doing very well with guilds, right next to NCFOM. Combining the two, you have a film that is very well positioned, even for a possible win.

Re: There Will Be Blood Oscars thread
This year is way too haywire, despite all the precursors I wouldn't be surprised if this is a nom-day snub. I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO BELIEVE ANYMORE. But seeing a lineup of No Country, Into the Wild, Atonement, Michael Clayton, and Diving Bell wouldn't shock me one bit.

Re: There Will Be Blood Oscars thread
I'd say TWBB is guaranteed 5 noms (Picture, Director, Actor, Screenplay, Score)
It's extremely likely to get 2 more (Cinematography and Editing)
And I'd say likely to get Art Direction as well.
That's 8 from where I stand. Some others here think it might get Sound and that will be great but I think it will end up with 8 (maybe with sound in place of Art Direction).
It will be the most nominated picture unless Atonement gets Picture.

Re: There Will Be Blood Oscars thread
Jonny Greenwood's score won't be getting so much as an Oscar nomination. It's been deemed ineligible. http://www.awardsdaily.com/?p=1118From what I've heard about the score, that sounds like incredibly sucky news.

Re: There Will Be Blood Oscars thread
WHAT.THE.FUCK.
From the same link, Into the Wild and Enchanted are also ineligible. So I guess they didn't have enough movies to qualify for Original Musical category seeing that Enchanted and Into the Wild competed for Original Score?
One can argue that they need to revive the old category of Song Score/Adapted Score.
