Crash isn't winning Best Picture. Brokeback has it, and will always have it. People are going to talk over the whole month about how Crash will win to stir things up, but it isn't happening. Brokeback Mountain surged in the critics awards, and won Best Director and Best Picture at the Globes and the Guilds. Crash has nada but a Chicago Film Critics win, I believe.
Has any film won Best Director AND Best Picture at the Globes AND Guilds, and not gone on to win the Oscar Best Picture?
PEACE, Mike.

Crash is a dreadful film. It's rather disheartening to see it with so many nominations. Apparently, ham-fisted direction, a cliche ridden script, and melodramatic acting are in this year with the Academy. Seriously, FUCK CRASH.
I'm happy about the Walk The Line snub, though. One of the most overrated films of the year.
Glad to see Munich sneaking in for Best Picture.
Jeff Daniels got robbed.
Amy Adams should win Supporting, but she won't.
William Hurt's nomination is great. He was fantastic in his ten minutes or so.
Noah Baumbach should win Best Original Screenplay, because The Squid And The Whale is the best screenplay of the year. Brokeback will win, though.
All in all, pretty disappointing stuff. No big surprises and a lot of overrated tripe getting way too many nominations.

I hated William Hurt in A History of Violence. Well, not so much him, but where the story went when he was introduced. It suddenly became this black comedy that wasn't very interesting.

Saving Private Ryan. It won BFCA's BP and BD, GG's BP and BD, PGA, DGA, editor guild, sound mixing and editing guilds, Chicago Film Critics, LAFC, and NYFCC.

LOL it's amusing to read about how boring the nominatins were.. has everyone forgotten that we are about to experience history???
BBM, a movie about two men in love, just got the most nominations and is the front runner.
Serisouly, folks, it's only boring because it's been happening for a while.. but it's now final and sealed. we are getting the first major motion picture that deals with same-sex love and it is a huge success..
I for one am definitely NOT bored.

Plus an AWESOME shot of our Best Supporting Actress nominees. Rachel Weisz and Michelle Williams look beautiful.
And our Best Actress nominees (although I consider them weak this year. The Academy resorted to nominating Dench again, and sticking Charlize Theron in there).
PEACE, Mike.

I'm pleasantly surprised to see Munich over Walk the Line for Best Picture.
And Terrence Howard for Hustle & Flow.
But, Narnia over Sith in Visual Effects? That's retarded.

I recorded the actual nomination announcements, so I'm about to go watch that.
But first, my thoughts:
All along, even in the weeks leading up to this, I really didn't think Capote had a chance to make it in over Walk the Line. But good on it.
Glad they didn't do something crazy and exclude Munich. I'm happy it did well.
I haven't seen A History of Violence, but I would have liked to have seen Maria Bello get some recognition. I'm wondering if this snub was, indeed, the result of a lead/supporting split.
I still find it crazy that Keira Knightley is now an Oscar-nominated actress. For an adaptation of Pride & Prejudice, to boot. Go figure. But hey, I probably would have nominated her, too.
Great job with the animation picks. I thought a Madagascar nomination was unavoidable.
And wow for Focus.

Good nominations for the most part.
I'm glad people such as Keira Knightley, Terrence Howard, William Hurt (wow) and Amy Adams (yay!) managed to get in. Frances McDormand's inclusion for North Country over Maria Bello is a little annoying, but I love McDormand, and Bello is good enough that she'll have more chances.
Nice to see Munich get in after almost everyone had written it off, although Capote being in over Walk the Line is kind of bleh in my book. Oh, well.
Look at the number of noms Focus got, sheesh.

My reactions:
- Hell YES to Munich's 5 nominations
- Hell YES to double nominee John Williams
- Hell NO to Munich being snubbed for cinematography
- Hell YES to Walk the Line being justifiably snubbed for being a poor man's Ray
- Hell Fucking YES to The New World being nominated for cinematography
- Hell NO for The New World being snubbed for everything else
- Hell YES to King Kong's tech nominations
- Hell NO to Newton-Howard's snub
- Hell NO for William Hurt
- Hell YES for the War of the Worlds love
and finally...
at the snub of Star Wars for visual effects. I love it.

Good. I like the New World nomination, but miss Kilcher sooo much. Theron is such filler.

George Lucas must have made the finger to someone of the academy, because ROTS not nominated for VFX is the most laughable thing i've seen today.
The other nominations a agree.....

This year’s Oscar nominations proved to be about as boring as the telecast is bound to be. No offense to Jon Stewart, who I’m sure is going to be the evening’s highlight, but there’s very little mystery to what is going to be a very gay affair. Thankfully there was no WTF moment like the snubbing of Paul Giamatti (made up for as the favorite for supporting actor this year), but then again we love those surprises because we can get all huffy and rail against the Oscars. Despite all the hoopla of Brokeback Mountain being this “revolutionary†flick (next year its gay plumbers I believe), it received the least amount of nominations as the front-runner since American Beauty in 1999. What does that mean? Nothing really. Kinda like this year’s Oscars in general. THE TOP FIVE SNUBS
1. Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (Visual Effects) – What the hell were they thinking? Does the tech community hate George Lucas that much? The original Star Wars Trilogy received 17 nominations, won seven and received three special achievement Oscars (two for FX and one for Sound). The new Trilogy only received 5 nominations (three to Phantom Menace) and won nada. Revenge of the Sith is the first Star Wars film not to be nominated or receive a special award for its visual effects.

I think this guy pretty much answered it right in his paragraph of questions. This isn't the "original Star Wars trilogy [that] received 17 nominations". This is the new trilogy, and many people think it sucks.
That being said, I would much rather see Revenge of the Sith get a special effects nomination over Narnia, but I don't believe it was Narnia that it was fighting with for the third position (unfortunately); I think it was War of the Worlds. And I am humongously, superduperly friggin' happy that War of the Worlds secured a special effects nomination, because the special effects are wonderful, and wonderfully used, in that film.
PEACE, Mike.

Hm...
Well I'm definatly happy with the animated nominees! I mean, Howl isn't Miyazaki's best but nominating Madagascar over it would be a travesty.
As much as I really liked Crash and to a lesser extent (unfortunately...) Munich, I really wish something else got Best Picture. (Constant Gardener, Walk the Line or King Kong, perhaps...)
Glad Adams and Howard got nominations, though.

I blame the Globes for Bello's snub. If they hadn't thrown her into Best Actress I think she would have been able to knock McDormand out of Supporting Actress. But that one nomination in lead probably caused enough category confusion to split the vote.

Weird. SO I guess by default, Scarlett will be nominated for her next movie with Woody Allen, while Bello will get in for something like.. I don't know, Racing Stripes 3?
