I LOVEDDDD Moulin Rouge!

But it's certainly not an old school movie magic musical, which seems to be the winning factor in Sweeney Todd.

Did I mention I loved Moulin Rouge!, cause I did.

It's one thing to be anticipating Sweeny Todd... it's another thing to throw Moulin Rouge! to the wolves for a movie you haven't seen yet!!!

f'o sho!

Not high enough!

Interesting that you have my #1 of the 2000s and #1 of the 1990s within two places though.

Yeah, I'm not sure how Sweeney plays in Texarkana.

texarkana? i've lived down south for 2 1/2 years. I'm from michigan. I just dislike Tim Burton a lot.

Top Ten mention and Director win at NBR. Not bad. They don't have a very good streak with directors (Remember when Zwick won for Last Samurai? Mann for Collateral?), but it certainly doesn't hurt. Also, mentioning it in the Top Ten when they snubbed Dreamgirls last year is a notable improvement.

I'm thisclose to predicting it for Picture, but definitely not a win yet.

Yeah, a nomination appears inevitable.

OK, I'm officially in this club now. I'm really feeling that this will win at this point.

Will Sweeney Todd Be The Highest Grossing Nominee?

Sweeney is opening on 2000+ Screens on Dec 21st.

Here's how recent musicals performed at the box office:

Chicago - 170.68 (12/17/02)
Hairspray - 118.8 (7/20/07)
Dreamgirls - 103.3 (12/15/06)
Moulin Rouge! - 57.3 (5/18/01)
The Phantom of the Opera - 51.2 Million (12/22/04)
Rent - 29.07 Million (11/23/05)
Across The Universe - 23.901 (9/14/07)
The Producers - 19.3 Million (12/16/05)

It's opening awfully late though. I wish it were opening earlier so it's garnered box office could be more impressive. It'll be hitting the nominations period so early in it's run. Ballots are mailed out Dec 26th.

Peace,
Mike

His films have grossed an average of $103 Million, with an average of $32 Million openings.

Nice

That's true Mike but then again, it's on course with Chicago and Dreamgirls to a point. Chicago grossed $64 Million of its $170 pre-nomination.

Final ballots go out on Jan 30th, which by then, Sweeney could have already outgrossed the other four nominees.

That's true, so it will have the box office strength for the Best Picture win by the time final ballots are mailed out (provided Sweeney Todd actually does well at the box office, which I think it will).

I just worry for it's nominations. To be frank, I want Sweeney Todd to get as many nominations as possible. Hell, I want 14 noms here. While were on the subject, is that even possible on an eligibility level? I know it has no original songs, so that hurts. Probably not an original score either? Let's see:

Best Picture
Best Director
Best Actor (Johnny Depp)
Best Supporting Actress (Helena Bonham Carter)
Best Supporting Actor (Sacha Baron Cohen)
Best Film Editing
Best Cinematography
Best Art Direction
Best Costume Design
Best Makeup
Best Adapted Screenplay
Best Sound Mixing
Best Sound Editing

Am I missing any? If not, it can't even get 14 nominations (well, unless it managed to get 2 supporting actor nominations, but I find that pretty much completely unlikely). A single Best Supporting Actor nom isn't even assured.

I'm not sure what other categories Sweeney Todd is poised to be strong in. Maybe you can help clarify loyal? I should probably look to what musicals ordinarily get nominated for, but I am too lazy to look back right now.

Peace,
Mike

Well, Sweeney is in a really weird position of not having any original songs. Dreamgirls had three Oscar nominated songs, while Phantom and Chicago had one each.

Sweeney needs those three acting noms to make up for lost ground. Dreamgirls and Chicago both won Best Sound Mixing but neither were nominated for Sound Editing. So it remains to be seen if Sweeney can be nominated.

So, a realistic (but still slightly assuming) look would be 10 nominations then:

Best Picture
Best Director
Best Actor (Johnny Depp)
Best Supporting Actress (Helena Bonham Carter)
Best Film Editing
Best Cinematography
Best Art Direction
Best Costume Design
Best Adapted Screenplay
Best Sound Mixing

I'm hoping it can nab at least 11, which it could with an added Best Sound Editing nom and/or Best Supporting Actor. But I will be happy with anything double digits, since that fulfills my "nominations dominator" hope. I assume Makeup is out, since that category is so whack and the weirdest films are nominated every year. And are they still at only 3 noms for that category? Lame.

Peace,
Mike

I have Makeup as a near lock. Ve Neill has been nominated 7 times for the Best Makeup Oscar. You have a period goth film with heavy amounts of stylish gore.

Past Oscar nominations for Neill:

Pirates of the Caribbean
Ed Wood (won)
Mrs Doubtfire (won)
Batman Returns
Hoffa
Edward Scissorhands
Bettlejuice (won)

Ooh, cool. I didn't know that. Well, that makes me happy. Here's to a Makeup nomination hopefully then, too!

Peace,
Mike

this is pretty much locked in for a nom now. I'm quite certain it won't win, but if Moulin Rouge could get in with a more mixed response than this seems to be getting, there's no way this is missing out.

And while the NBR has to make me withdraw TWBB as a "lock," I'm still quite certain it wasn't screened for them due to being fully shut out despite extraordinary reviews. Meaning Atonement, NCFOM, and ST are the close-to-locks, with TWBB close behind, and the last slot being slightly up in the air, while I lean towards Juno for being the only lighthearted possibility [aside from CWW, which very likely won't pick up a nom]

There Will Be Blood shouldn't be a lock anyway. It has the same studio as No Country For Old Men, and that's a pretty reliable indicator in my experience.

I'm thinking:

Best Picture
Best Director
Best Actor (Depp)
Best Art Direction
Best Cinematography
Best Costume Design
Best Editing
Best Makeup
Best Sound Mixing

9 nominations, actually the exact same noms Moulin Rouge got just with Director. And really, if the film were to catch on like Loyal wishes, I could see it sweeping all of these categories (Sans maybe Cinematography, assuming the Deakins love keeps up).

How could I ever doubt the Burton. I now declare, sight unseen, that this film shall be my Children of Men of 2007.

It was Christopher Smith of the Daily Bangor News that finally tipped me over the edge.

That RT average is superb. If it can maintain that, I'll be mightily impressed, and I will probably have to drop my membership from the Atonement thread and officially predict a Sweeney Todd win.

Peace,
Mike

My (new) thinking on this is that this is probably the closest Burton's ever going to get to making an Academy-friendly film. Lots of people in Hollywood love him (at a guess), and if they don't, well, they certainly recognise him as a visionary auteur deserving of praise and recognition. And they probably also realise that this is the only time he's ever going to come close to getting it.

And that will probably trump any other director this year. I'm calling him a shoo-in for the Best Director Oscar come February.

I'm going to be so pissed if I'm dissapointed. Time and time again I've gotten onboard his projects due to their beautiful trailers, only to be let down once more. Well, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory may be an exception and had I been old enough to see anything he's made in theaters pre Mars Attacks it'd be differnent, but still, that's a lot of bruises. And with this film getting such ridiculous hype on here I can't help but feel another sting coming.
