I'm incredibly disappointed with the 5 for 5 director category which, admittedly, had begun to seem inevitable.
We can usually count on it as being the one category that throws us for a loop. But nope.
I'm really happy for Bennett Miller, though.

Why all this win buzz for Crash?
- It has the editing nomination and Brokeback hasn't - yes, but it only has the SAG ensemble so far too..
- it's doesn't have the bigger box office of the 2, and BP winners always end up in the top 20, with a few exceptions (something that BBM can easely achieve and Crash can't)..
-and it's probably been even more time than the no-editing-for-BP-thing since a movie went to win BP with only 6 noms - with only ONE acting nomination..

Things I am really happy about:
- The Oscars didn't go for the commercial flicks in the Best Animated category, but rather gave the noms to the deserving ones (Howl's Moving Castle)
- Best Screenplay nominations for Match Point and A History of Violence
- Terrence Howard getting a nom
- Sophie Scholl being nominated. Third year in a row with a German Best Foreign Picture nominee!
Things I am upset about:
- No VFX nomination for Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith
- No nomination for Bello

Disappointed in the lack of attention for "Cinderella Man", a damn fine movie. "Walk the Line" without a Best Picture nod = sad X. Nice to see the attention, however, for "Crash", "A History of Violence", and even Terrence Howard. I don't think Terrence really deserved the nomination so soon, but he did a fine job in "Hustle and Flow", so I'm not going to complain.
My Best Picture Grades: Brokeback Mountain - B Crash - A Good Night, and Good Luck. - B-
I'll have to see Capote and Munich now.
Nominatiosn are supposed to be for your performance htis year, none of this not so soon, what should Howard wait five years rack up alot of good performances and then win for an goo/ok performance in a crap film (ala Al Pacino in Scent of a Woman). I hate this, not a nominations o soon, or they are so young...they one lifetime achievement award.

The writing's been on the Bello wall for a while now.
Crash has buzz right now....because it does. Buzz, as we know, is a hard thing to quantify. But it's out there. SAG win, lots of media coverage (for whatever reason), and its supporters seem to be coming out about the film now. And it's been gradully gaining momentum for a while.
Plus, its looking like it might win for its Screenplay.

It's easely the second spot, and that says alot about the competition..
but I wouldn't be too worried..
P.S. - I can't wait to see Crash out of my top 10..

I'd rather any film from this year win, honestly, if I had a gun to my head I'd award P to Deuce Bigelo: European Gigolo over Crash.
Did anyone see Matt Dillion talking about Crash on the Today Show. I love it when Katie COuric talks about how great a film she has not seen is.

*shudder*
The part of Crash that is the absolute worse is the screenplay, its what made the film such a train wreck

I concur.
But special points to Haggis' ham-fisted direction!

Excellent, they made the right choices for animated film. They really chose the best ones and not the popular ones. Way to go Academy.

The first time I saw Crash I loved it. On my second viewing, my grade for it had dropped significantly. I certainly don't want to see it win Best Picture. Anw, Yey for Keira, knew she would show up. I'll be watching Pride and Prejudice next week when it opens here. I'm glad to see Howard as well as Munich get a Best Picture nod. No real surprises though this year. Let's hope the night gives us some surprise winners, especially in the acting categories, less so in Picture and Director.

Usually on Oscar morning, I'm angry and raving. But I'm just....bored with these. It's hard to get too mad at Crash. We knew what was coming. Had it done better than we expected, then I would have had an excuse.
But Constant Gardener's absence from Cinematography is bothersome. And so is the absense of Maria Bello....but, again, that's been obvious for a while now.
Keira was a pleasant surprise. I really thought they were over her and the movie.

I really have the impression that if I saw Crash right now, with all this hype surronding it, I'd end up giving it a B- or even less.. that's what hype can make to a well made but overrated movie...
I've only seen it in May/June and at the time I gave it a B+ - it was the first good movie I've seen in months aside from The Upside of Anger (is it me or this year the dumping season was even worse than usual?), so I was impressed...
I'm afraid my reaction can change with a 2nd viewing, which usually doesn't..

I saw Crash recently for the second time and had the same problems with it that I had before... but still liked it quite a bit.

It's a likable movie... it can even be a lovable film, if you're willing to overlook the flaws (so I can understand the love), but it can also be hateful, if you're in the mood to trash it..
I just can't imagine a scenario where this wins over Brokeback.. I just can't

Hey, I really don´t think It will.
But It´s a strong movie (IMO, of course). And It´s very likely going to win original screenplay, methinks.

What saddens me the most is to think that Eternal Sunshine would easely be in Crash's spot if it was released this year..
