 Re: The Official Oscar Thread
The ceremony itself was terrific. Hugh Jackman should return next year! He was so energetic. I loved the song-and-dance numbers. The winners were mostly predictable, but still solid. I'm very excited Cruz and Winslet were recognized. A good night.

A good night. What? I hope this ceremony doesn't go down as bad. I enjoyed it. A lot! Hugh was very fun and many of the new touches -- such as bringing out several past winners to introduce the nominated performances before announcing the winner -- were interesting. This was a success story, IMO.

 Re: The Official Oscar Thread
I enjoyed the show and the unique presentation of the acting categories was a nice idea and led to some memorable moments (the ridiculously gorgeous Marion Cotillard was sooo adorable praising Winslet). The Slumdog juggernaut was a bit much though.
Oh, and we got a short but sweet clip of Public Enemies in the reel at the end of the show....is that the first we've seen from this movie, video wise, or did I miss something?

 Re: The Official Oscar Thread
The upcoming film footages in the credits just demonstrate the undeniable fact that the Oscar serves only the interest of its membership, i.e. big studios. It is an in-group thing after all.

 Re: The Official Oscar Thread
Of course Philippe Petit stole the show.
Hugh was good. Steve Martin should be a part of every awards show. The way of presenting was stupid. Slumdog sucks. Happy for Kate. Penn stole Rourke's award.
Bring on '09.

Finally the time of Loyal's denial is over (Streep over Winslet! Slumdog not winning this and not winning that! Slumdog not passing Benjamin Button at the box-office!), heh.

 Re: The Official Oscar Thread
I thought it was a really decent show this year and considering how predictable the winners were, it was a pretty entertaining show. I thought the acting category presentations were an interesting change. Don't know if I'd want that every year. They did break a long-running tradition of past opposite-gender category winners presenting current acting winner but I don't think it was a complete bust. The Judd Apatow short wasn't that funny really. The musical numbers were fine. The year in review by genre was bearable (looks like it's physicially impossible to not incorporate some kind of clip-montage at the Oscars) but it was funny that they snubbed fantasy/sci-fi thought it was cool to mention Dark Knight in the opening number about the Best Pictures. Slumdog not sweeping - nice. Curious Case actually picked up 3... not too bad. I gotta say, The Wrestler was my favorite and IMO Best Film of the year and I think Rourke gave the performance of the year but I'm kinda glad Sean Penn won. The highlight of the night was most definitely the political turn by Milk winners Dustin Lance Black and Sean Penn. The very open and overt gay speech and scenes/clips really did lift up the show for me personally. I actually, for a few seconds, thought Milk can mayyyyyyyyyybe upset but then I came to my senses

Slumdog aside, Milk was actually the other big winner of the night, heh.

So was that the closest that Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Aniston have been in years?

Didn't need the private joke from Ben Stiller and the camera cutting away during the Obituaries was inexcusable. Why did they do that?

 Re: The Official Oscar Thread
After it all ended, I still think it turned out bad overall. I was originally enthused with Jackman as host but ended up hating those song/dance numbers and then he was mixing in stuff he did at the Tonys way back during the big musical montage which I thought was ridiculous.
I can't believe people are actually enjoying that. We don't need to go back to the days when song/dance routines were the norm every year.
The presentation of the awards gets funky every year it seems. I liked it in the past when during one of Whoopi's host gigs the costumes were presented in a way where they were actually worn. I didn't care for the way the actors received their awards. I kind of wavered during the Best Actress award but overall I am not warm to this new idea, I think.
The Best song presentation was also bad and annoying. Why have these people running out of nowhere to the stage and then singer not singing on the stage and what was with the layout of the seating here. That inner bowl...I just didn't get it.
Awards wise, I was glad Kate, Ledger, Penelope won. Penn/Rourke was a toss up but would have been nice to have heard a Rourke speech here. The best speech was from one of the early award winners from Milk. It was very current and relevant.
I'm sure the ratings will be down. Who could actually stay glued and watch all of it? I didn't even hear the Best actor speech nor the Best picture speech either. This show was just presented so sloppily. I'm sad to say this, but I don't wanna see Jackman do this again. I'd rather have Whoopi back...Plz!

The one thing that REALLY bothered me was the stupid ADD camerawork during the In Memoriam segment. That was very tacky.

Although having five previous winners for the acting categories was a nice idea, it really slowed the pacing of the show, otherwise, it was a solid show, but there was no real wow factor to it.
