 Re: The Contenders Thread 2009
the first look at 2009 Post Oscar (I think) http://www.incontention.com/?p=4464#more-4464he ends with Quote: (P.S.: One film I didn’t mention in the column is James Cameron’s “Avatar.†You can tell by the materials below that it’s clearly on my mind. However, I can’t really figure out how to qualify it for awards quite yet. We really need to see what he’s come up with first. It could be a game changer or merely a technical dazzler. Time will tell.) pretty much spot on.

Looks like Meryl Streep is in two movies this year, will she get nominated again?

Is it supporting (the Nine girls will be insane)? Is it Comedy Lead (again, song and dance)? If it's Drama, I'd be worried about Chompers Magee and that pesky aviation biopic. As for the big race, right now I have Best ActressPenélope Cruz, Abrazos Rotos Michelle Pfeiffer, Cheri Carey Mulligan, An Education Saoirse Ronan, The Lovely Bones Hillary Swank, Amelia I'm most curious about Mulligan since people went batshit crazy over her at Sundance. I don't know how to place the Nine actresses in Lead but I reckon one or more may pop up there at some point on my list.

 Re: The Contenders Thread 2009
Meryl is in Julie and Julia right?
It's based on a memoir/non-fiction. Light drama/comedic performance and a supporting role. But if it ends up like Prada, will be bumped to Lead.

It's based on a memoir (?). Light drama/comedic performance. They showed footage during the credits last night. I'm highly suspicious of Nora Ephron's ability to make good films.

Ooh, I never thought of that! I hope they go for the last weekend in January (i.e. Jan 31). That would be awesome. But it seems likely to me they'll just stick it in March, even though I don't want to have to wait that long. A Jan 31 Oscar show would create a neat dynamic in terms of following the Oscar season, with a few guild winner announcements and other things occurring after the Oscars (unless everyone squeezed even further to be ahead of them). Peace, Mike

 Re: 2009 Best Picture Prospects
loyalfromlondon wrote: It sounds awfully cheesy. So like, the girl spends the movie standing on a cloud looking down at her family? Heaven in The Lovely Bones is completely unconventional, and probably the best reason Peter Jackson should direct it. Personally, I have my doubts about PJ directing, and hasn't this had a rough production? Susan Sarandon sure sounded befuddled when talking about it. loyalfromlondon wrote: Is Wahlberg a better choice for the dad than Ryan Gosling? He's certainly the lesser evil. Ryan Gosling is way, way too young for the part. The book took place over more than a decade, and he begins by being a father of a 12(?) year-old. Public Enemies most reminds me of American Ganster. At it's best, it'll be a great action movie... And it still won't get anything besides techs, maybe an acting nod. The Human Factor could certainly hit it big, but just because something is so baity doesn't mean it's guaranteed. I could say the same for Nine. Everyone expected Rob Marshall's last film to be the frontrunner, and Memoirs of a Geisha certainly was not. Acting noms seem like a certainty, but I'm hesitant to call anything a lock for BP this ridiculously early on. Be it Revolutionary Road or Cold Mountain, sometimes things just go bad. AnJon Lyrik Chigurh wrote: Can it really be weaker than 2008? Well, I'm not predicting Nine anyway, nothing that obvious seems to get in anymore.
It'd be ridiculous if they got six nominations again after all this, though. Well, is the Writer's Guild strike still having ripple effects? A lot of terrible/mediocre scripts were due to this (Mummy 3, Quantum of Solace, etc), but maybe that's more blockbusters than Oscar material.

June release date doesn't help either. I think it's simply too inaccessible, but Viggo and Kodi are still strong contenders. So's Aguirresrobe.

Re: Well...the 2009 Contenders Discussion Thread
Mann has the batting average of a 40-year-old minor leaguer, so his name is hardly a guarantee. For every Insider there's a Miami Vice. Heat is his defining film: a lot of quality swallowed up in excess and poorly realized ambition. The movie just strikes me as cheesy.

Yes, though I've seen it somewhere else in the meantime, lol.
Oh and Miami Vice is an incredibly underrated film.

I'm surprised Bale isn't above the title.
Mann has yet to make a disposable work. I doubt he's gonna start now.

Re: Well...the 2009 Contenders Discussion Thread
Looks a good bit like the American Gangster poster. With a summer release date and probably a good bit more action, I think it's safe to say that Public Enemies will be more of a blockbuster than an Oscar player.
