I'm pretty impressed the HFPA had the stuff to give the Best Director win to Schnabel. Awesome.
Peace, Mike

Re: Golden Globes, Er News Conference Party Down Thread
When is the last time a BD winner at the Globes didn't get nominated for BP?

The Cardinal (1963) Spartacus (1960) East of Eden (1955)
Those are all of the Best Picture (Drama) winner to get snubbed for Best Picture out of their 65 winners. Nice odds.

Great to see Atonement and Sweeney Todd pick up big wins. Also glad to see Juno not pick up anything.

Atonement has a 94% chance of getting a BP nom. I'd say it's pretty much a lock then.

There Will Be Blood Atonement Sweeney Todd/Michael Clayton/Juno No Country for Old Men The Diving Bell and the Butterfly/Into the Wild

Great for Schnabel, Cotillard and Blanchett. I'm a bit confused with Atonement winning over NCFOM and TWBB but thats typical of the Globes.

1 No Country for Old Man - FRONTRUNNER 2 Into The Wild - almost lock 3 There Will be Blood - almost lock 4 Michael Clayton - very strong 5 The Diving Bell and Butterfly - getting closer and closer
6 Atonement - very close, but it is the 6th everywhere 7 Juno - too young for the Academy 8 Sweeney Todd - slim chance

Re: Golden Globes, Er News Conference Party Down Thread
Why are people still hesitant to predict Diving Bell? I think that, between this win and the DGA/WGA noms, it's obviously beloved enough to overcome that. It's in, peoples.

Re: Golden Globes, Er News Conference Party Down Thread
Certainly great wins for Atonement and Sweeney Todd. Still, the biggest winner today/tonight is The Diving Bell, considering it basically won its BP and then the most importantly BD. I agree with PosJon that it looks quite safe; at least if it's snubbed, it'd be unprecedented, foreign or not.

I think it's overwhelming evidence that Schnabel himself is in (Best Director), but I'm still not ready to predict the actual film to be nominated for Best Picture. DGA and Globe Best Director are directing awards afterall, heh. But I agree, the film is clearly beloved. I still question though whether the Academy would stick it in Best Picture. I hope they do! Peace, Mike

For a foreign film to win Best Director says something; I agree that it means that Diving Bell will probably get an Oscar nod.

Atonement is resurrected from the dead, Juno is more dead than before. But even with its win, I'm not convinced that Sweeney Todd is even in the top 10 in the race.

Certainly not as the Oscar nominations polls are closed. If Atonement gets a PGA, that's a great buzz. Unless it is out of the race. Sweeney has a very slim chance.

Innnteresting. Even though I don't think Atonement is better than No Country or There Will Be Blood, I'm glad this doesn't turn into a coronation for No Country, or a two-horse race between No Country and Blood. Even though... I guess if polls are closed, it doesn't mean a whole lot.

Hell yes! I want Atonement to sneak it, but then Michael Clayton should be out. And somehow that movie gained lot more support.

Re: Golden Globes, Er News Conference Party Down Thread
Well... that wasn't awkward. Between the jokes, quiet almost laugh track-like applause, and overlong clips, I think that went well! Oh and I hate to be the pessimist, but I think the Picture/Director wins were more about the Globes being alienated by No Country and Blood than anything else. Atonement's back in it though. More and more this looks like the weirdest year that we've probably ever seen. The SAGs, DGA, Globes, and box-office are all at odds with each other.

Without Juno, we'll have five movies that grossed under $50m.
Crazyyyyyy.

Watch the BP nominess be something off the wall like:
3:10 to Yuma The Bourne Ultimatum Gone Baby Gone Once Ratatouille
Just because this year has just been so crazy

Re: Golden Globes, Er News Conference Party Down Thread
Well... Atonement will probably get up to 70 mil+ if it gets a BP nom, they'll milk it out
No Country is at 46.8 right now, it'll slide over
Michael Clayton can maybe get up to 50 with its award re-release
But yeah, worst year for box-office ever.
