After seeing it and ranking it as my favorite film of the year thus far, it just doesnt have the chance. I really have no idea how even the BIGGEST supporter of the film can watch it and tell me thats a film that would win best picture.
It would be a HUGE shock to me if the Academy would honor a film such as this with an oscar. From every single best picture film i've seen, not one of them cattered less to the Academy then this film.

It's the anti-BP.
Cases can be made for fantasy films winning (ROTK) comedies over epics (Shakespeare in Love) and ensemble pieces over a sure thing (Crash).
Giving The Departed BP would be akin to awarding it to Spider-Man 2. No matter how entertaining the film, I don't think the AMPAS is ready.

So in effect its like Pulp Fiction? Universally praised but the Academy would never honour it with BP???

That isnt a bad example actually. I do think if there was no Forrest Gump, Pulp could've taken home the gold. This year there most likely isnt gonna be a huge grossing oscar movie that everyone loves like Forrest Gump, but at the sametime Pulp Fiction is a freakin classic, while Departed is a damn fine film that isnt being called Marty's best, just the best movie he's done since Goodfellas.
I really think Departed's ending will take it out the top 3, it makes Taxi Driver's ending look incredibly oscar friendly.

It's not even the content of the ending that dooms the film, it's its flippant nature. The AMPAS hasn't always stayed clear of violence. But you need high art to compliment it. And The Departed, to its credit, is total flash and popcorn.

Yeah, it doesnt induce raw emotion, you arent really saddened by the end, you're just shocked at how f'in ballsy it was. That should hurt it.

Any analysis on Martin Scorcese's directorial chances (i.e. say Dreamgirls/Martin Scorcese split) based on your viewing of the film?

Split seems extremely possible at this point.

Having yet to see the other big players, the only scenario on the table is a split.

And you all tried telling me it was a FREAKING CRIME DRAMA.

I don't *think* I said it would win BP, but this will be recognized. I'm thinking a Munich-ish reception by AMPAS. Or is that too hopeful?
We'll see. Frankly, I don't give a damn. I loved it.

Scorsese has a shot (and I still think he might miss once again - I mean, he's still directing a remake!), but the picture? Nope. I just don't see it, not even with a perfect 100 at RT

Un;ess the Academy decides to snub it in the major categories, I think Marty has this one in the bag.
It would be such a refreshing surprise to see it win, but I agree, it's not exactly the type of fare the AMPAS goes for. But Scorceses should have Best Director in the bag!

I think Lecter and I decided that if The Departed picks up critics awards, then the writing is on the wall. Otherwise, I think we're looking at a split (once again, sigh).

While I certainly agree on the latter, I still can't see a split. Really, when did we have two in a row last time? Ever?
They might snub Marty again.
Or have the film sweep like Silence of the Lambs which was an unusual pick as well. Or The French Connection.
It does have the box-office now.

It's been quite some time
51/52
48/49
35/36/37
so it's either due or unlikely.

In the last six years, there's been a split three times. So one can argue that it's probably 50/50 for a split this year.

I think it will be split.
Flags will probably get a BP and BD nom but early reviews indicate it will win neither. Then it all depends on Dreamgirls. If that dissapoints - its a shoot out between The Departed and The Queen.

At this point I agree that The Departed is the frontrunner - I don't really believe that it being "fun", "ballsy", and "violent" are big enough cons to hold it back from winning BP if the competition isn't overwhelming (and at this point, that's looking unlikely unless Dreamgirls amazes).

Looks like the Teddy bio pic isn't going to be next for Marty.

Quote: His next film will be a low-budget departure for him, Scorsese said: an adaptation of Shusaku Endo's novel "Silence," which tells the story of two 17th century Portuguese missionaries who travel to Imperial Japan and witness the persecution of Japanese Christians.
