Bobby won't get nominated. It doesn't have the reviews or the pedigree.
Iwo Jima has a chance if it's M$B good, but with that all-to-recent win and the disappointing Flags weighing it down, I don't think it'll happen at this point. Plus the bump to a limited December release reeks of desperation. Of course, until actual reviews start coming in, it's far too early to say.
In other news, Children of Men for BP!

This Iwo Jima is like a Japanese sneak attack. Should have just opened it on December 7th.
Casino Royale has absolutely no chance, and this is the one aspect of the Oscars that I have never liked. Every film and genre should have an equal chance. There's a good chance that CR will be one of the top 5 critical films, and it's sure to have the box office, no doubt, but it won't even be considered.

Rex Reed liked Booby. It's at 69% and COTC is now up. I'll do a full update soon.

I can't believe I called it Booby. That wasn't done on purpose.
Anyway, Bobby received a positive and a negative.

No surprise over here, Notes on a Scandal is not an oscar contender.

I wouldn't count it out after one review of course, though that does put a stick in my wild-card 5th nominee choice...

Oh wow look, Levy raised his Casino Royale review from a B to a B+. Im sure it has nothing to do with the immense about of praise it's been getting, kinda like when he lowers his grades for movies it has nothing to do with the bad buzz the movie gets.

Dreamgirls' reactions should be coming in now.

It's today (15th).
And the words from OW forum are very enthusiastic.

I posted a review in The Dreamgirls thread from Foxnews (only review I could find). I'm seeing it on Monday.

He seems to have a bad habit of raising and lowering his grades after a consensus starts to form.

It may only have 6 reviews right now, but Bobby is at 47 on Metacritic.

Bobby is now rotten with 25 reviews in. MC score is stuck at 53 as well. It's pretty much over for Bobby.

Ya, it's actually doing worse than I thought. I never saw it as a Best Picture contender but it's falling pretty flat right at the release.
And honestly, up until maybe a couple weeks ago the only word, news, or any type of buzz I had heard about Bobby was from Maverikk's posts
And I suggest putting up Casino Royale up there... I know it's uncoventional but that's a mighty impressive RT score for ANY movie.

Quote: The only character who emerges as more than an ideological mouthpiece, and nearly saves the movie, is the Ambassador's resident hairstylist, who masks her faded beauty with a thick coat of eye shadow and an overteased hairdo. I kept wondering who this deeply sad, earthy actress was, making so much out of so little, until I realized it was Sharon Stone in the most naked performance she's ever given without taking her clothes off.
Sharon Stone still has a shot, with the Harvey push and all...? *prays*
I only see noms for Supporting Actress and Song right now
(The review itself is a 40 at Metacritic.. )

With reviews as awful as they are (down to 40 range now at both RT and MC, and NY Post called it one of the worse movies of the year), I don't think anybody will survive, not for Oscar at least.

So like, where did Mav go?
Anyway, Kris finally has charts again, and is also predicting Aaron Eckhart for Best Actor.
?
And I know its not a very good thing to think ater someone dies, but. . .could Altman's death get him a lone director nom, and help the film in other categories?

Probably not with A Prairie Home Companion and all the directors in contention, but I'd say a screenplay nom becomes likely. Meryl and other acting nods are also possible.

The film had good scores on metacritic and rotten tomatoes. I think an Oscar directorial nomination makes a lot of sense, especially given the weak year and how many times Altman has been nominated in the past. This will be the last chance for directors to pay their respects ot him. In fact, he might even win against Scorcese and Condon depending on whether there is a public sentiment to vote for him.
Also, I won't be surprised if A Prairie Home Companion sneaked into picture as well, in place of other early year/summer releases. All it needs is for Picturehouse to start doing a little campaigning to gain traction, the ball is up to the distributor.

That's exactly what I think. Even though he won the honorary Oscar this year, people might feel tempted to nominate him one last time...
I'm still shocked. I mean, the man was 81 years old, but Manoel de Oliveira is almost 98 and he's still making movies (of course, Oliveira is the exception, being the oldest working filmmaker alive...)

It hasn't all worked out that way in the past. Kubrick wasn't nominated for Eyes Wide Shut (80% RT with 7.5 average, 83% COTC with 7.7 average, 68 at MC with 4 100's, better box office) the same year when he passed away.

EWS was a near-3 hour sex odyssey that turned off many, many people. A Prairie Home Companion is, to put it mildly, a slightly more accessible swan song. But I doubt he'd win, or that the film would get a BP nom. Right now, I see it getting nommed for Director and Song.

I think APHC will win something so that someone will be able to pay tribute to Altman personally besides the usual segment (he will surely get the biggest applause/ovation there). Maybe Meryl for supporting, especially if Hudson goes lead.
