 Re: Contenders 2016
How happy is Netflix right now? They would have spent even more money for something they'd have to shelve next to that unreleased Bill Cosby stand-up special they produced.

You don't believe Fox will release The Birth of a Nation?

 Re: Contenders 2016
There is inevitably going to be an article comparing response to Parker's past to the fact Roman Polanski has won an Oscar and collaborated with half of Hollywood (Pierce Brosnan, Johnny Depp, Harrison Ford, Jodie Foster, Ben Kingsley, Walter Matthau, Ewan McGregor, John C. Reilly, Sigourney Weaver, Kate Winslet, etc.) since fleeing punishment for a sexual assault.

 Re: Contenders 2016
Birth of a Nation is fucked. Nate Parker has gotten so much negative press in the past few days and the big exposé that a few news outlets have published detailing every aspect of the incident is incredibly disturbing.
Also, apparently FOX was planning on doing a big college/church tour with Parker this fall leading up to the film's release. Can't see them doing that now.
I think it's very telling they moved Hidden Figures into the awards race officially today with everything going on.

Yea this film is toast.. I mean being the lead actor in the film too will just make it even harder to anyone to get past it. Also apparently the movie has Turner's wife getting raped

 Re: Contenders 2016
Ok, so the film is toast, critically and in terms of recognition at awards. But perhaps the controversy will help its box office fortunes. I mean, we have seen this sort of thing before. Not because "we must see that film with the rapist", but because it just raises the profile of the film. It becomes a talking point, and in some ways it raises its importance from small, art film to must-see.

 Re: Contenders 2016
Looks like that's the line they're spinning. Quote: Although there has been speculation that the controversy surrounding news of the 2001 rape trial would imperil “The Birth of a Nation’s” Oscar chances, Fox Searchlight management considers that a secondary concern, sources say. The company, which is opening the movie wide on Oct. 7, as planned, is more interested in the film being a commercial success than it is with capturing awards. Fox spent a whopping $17.5 million to acquire the picture at Sundance and is prepared to make a “big media spend,” according to a source familiar with the plans.

 Re: Contenders 2016
That is complete bullshit When they bought it at Sundance part of the reason it was sold to them by Parker and his team was because of what they did with 12 Years A Slave.

 Re: Contenders 2016
It is almost fascinating how, at every turn, a larger narrative has magnified or diminished this one film. I believe most agree it was the HOT ITEM at Sundance mainly because of #OscarsSoWhite. The perfect film to buy, buy, buy and reap the reward when the reactionary Oscars rolled around again.

 Re: Contenders 2016
The Daily Beast article is just brutal. http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2 ... -case.htmlQuote: It was no simple wave.
Minutes after bringing down the Sundance Film Festival house with the world premiere of Birth of a Nation, filmmaker Nate Parker invited the “family” of cast and crew (most had tears in their eyes) onstage for helping him land his eight-year opus on the silver screen.
During the Q&A, Parker realized he had missed someone.
“Jean? Where’s Jean? Come here,” he said, waving his right hand that held the mic.
Jean was Jean Celestin—Parker’s former Penn State roommate and wrestling teammate. The bearded, bespectacled man took his place next to Parker and was praised for co-writing and developing the film about Nat Turner’s slave rebellion that is already an Oscar favorite.
They stood there, soaking up the splendor.
But that wave. Celestin had perhaps seen it before.
It was back in August 1999, when Parker allegedly waved Celestin into his bedroom as he was having sex with a Penn State freshman, according to court testimony.

Fox Searchlight seems to be deleting any rape-related posts from their page and the film's official page.

 Re: Contenders 2016
There's pretty much no way an African American themed film isn't cleaning up at the Oscars this year. My money is now on Hidden Figures, which looks very crowd-pleasing and the Academy should eat up. Reminds me of The Help.
Kind of feeling sorry for Fox Searchlight right now though. It has got to suck to have this film on your hands.

It could still do well. Woody Allen and Roman Polaski both had worse scandals and won Oscars.

Woody Allen had been nominated 16 times (with 3 wins) before the allegations came out in 1992. He was a respected director and screenwriter. Nate Parker is nothing. It is his first time. This could damage him and the film much more. He has no reputation to fall back on. No following to carry him through the tough times. Roman Polanski was equally as respected, with two Oscar nominations, two BAFTA wins etc. And Polanski's reputation has been tarnished. There is no denying that. As has Allen's.

 Re: Contenders 2016
Allen was also never charged. Quite literally a he said/she thing with an ugly break-up involved.
Now, that doesn't mean I think Allen is a good guy (he isn't, that interview he gave earlier in the year discussing his relationship with Soon-Yi was revolting) but I don't know and will never know if he's an actual molester. The unhealthy fixation with having teenage girls / very young women as his love interests throughout his work is troubling.
And yeah - Hidden Figures seems to have all the components of a big, crowd-pleasing hit.

It helps that Woody Allen and Roman Polanski are white.

In general, sure. But in this specific case, I don't think the reaction to Parker would be very different if he were white or asian or hispanic.

 Re: Contenders 2016
Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk will premiere at the New York Film Festival. This continues Ang Lee's streak of premiering films there, as Life of Pi was the opener of the festival in 2012.
I'm glad it's premiering because the rest of the festival this year is seriously lacking - it has a bunch of movies that have screened at previous festivals and some random Ava DuVerney doc as the opener. The only thing resembling a big premiere other than Billy Lynn will be the launches of 20th Century Women and The Lost City of Z.

It bothers me The Lost City of Z is debuting at a film festival this year, but they are saying, "Eh, then it will come out in 2017." I am super excited for it.
