There was an article on Deadline about The Beaver which is apparently very very good and Gibson give s a great performance. It's directed by Jodie Foster. It's still not clear when it's coming out, but the article hints Summit might push it for this year's Oscars.

Yeah The Beaver is a big unknown but doubtful it could make a push for BP. It will probably be better off waiting and joining Tree of Life in 2011.

There is Another Year, but I'm not feeling that one, as late release date (Dec 29th for it) has shown to be more of a hindrance than help with the compacted precursor schedule. Sally Hawkins could get nominated for Made in Dagenham, and it could sneak into the BP top 10. Overall though, I don't see any films we haven't known about to have BP winner potential. With both Coen Brothers and Danny Boyle having won recently, I agree with the consensus that the BP is down to The Social Network and King's Speech, with Fincher the prohibitive favorite to win BD while Colin Firth looking strong for Actor.

Agree in the end it looks like it will be TSN vs TKS.

It's still September. I'm willing to bet we haven't discussed at least one more movie that will be nominated for Best Picture...

True. There is always the one or two surprises late in the year. Let's see what happens! (Its actually rare that we think its all a done deal by September - but this year it has been the case so far)

Hm, I take back what I said before about The Social Network. It might be Fincher's most acclaimed film to date. Benjamin Button ended up with seven 100-scores at MC, Fight Clubd had six and Zodiac five.

This one has five with six reviews in. This looks like Fincher's version of There Will Be Blood set in modern times. I expect at least 12-13 100-scores, possibly more.

The King's Speech is the only serious competitor because it will have bigger actors' support (Geoffrey Rush looks like a good candidate for the Supporting Actor Oscar, Firth is a near-lock for Best Actor) and full British support.

Could the fact a great deal of The Social Network isn't..."true" hurt it? The way The Hurricane had a cloud over its head.

If they haven't already, Fincher and Sorkin should just come and say, "It's a character modeled on/inspired by Mark Zuckerberg."

The book it's based isn't even all truth; there are a lot of conjectures by the author there too. Don't see it being an issue at all. After all, even controversy didn't stop A Beautiful Mind from winning.

Nobody ever said the movie was depicting true events. It's based on one, but that doesn't mean that's how everything happened.

My only point was: now and then, such as with The Hurricane, people decide to realize not every biopic/docudrama is a 100 percent reflection of reality and get annoyed.

And I thought this might be one of those cases, in particular since its subject is a living 26-year-old.

It doesn't help that 26-year-old to prove he's not that bad by making some weird and eccentric moves.

So at this point we've got likely winners for:

Best Picture: The Social Network
Best Director: David Fincher
Best Actor: Colin Firth
Best Actress: Annette Bening or Natalie Portman
Best Supporting Actor: Geoffrey Rush
Best Adapted Screenplay: The Social Network
Best Original Screenplay: The King's Speech
Best Animated Film: Toy Story 3

The Best Supporting Actress race is the one that really seems quite open now. However if come Oscar night Helena Bonham Carter also wins for The King's Speech, I'd start getting worried for The Social Network's BP chances.

IMO, it should be "Colin Firth or James Franco."

I know Firth is overdue, was splendid in A Single Man last year, etc., but Franco's also very well-regarded and he's going to cut his fucking arm off. :P

Firth's film will be more acclaimed and he's playing freakin' royalty. Freakin' speech-disabled royalty!!

Firth might be the new Peter O'Toole. :P

I just can't rule Franco out... His performance sounds so powerful. And the nature of the role; so many scenes alone, portraying such intense emotions, the amputation--it's dynamite. Plus, it seems Aron Ralston is more than willing to pound the press pavement for the film and Franco's cause.

Oh, and Fox Searchlight > the Weinsteins at playing the Oscar game as of late.

Fox Searchlight will get a Best Actress win this year anyway. I just realized that The Kids Are All Right and Black Swan are both their films.

The Kids Are All Right is not a Fox Searchlight movie it from Focus. Though with Black Swan they also have 127 Hours, Never Let Me Go and Conviction.

I haven't paid much attention to Stone, but Jeffrey Wells and the A.V. Club both seem to feel it has Oscar potential.

Interesting. I'm not sure, though. Don't get me wrong--I LOVE Weir and Farrell, and it's based on a super-compelling memoir, but still, I'm nervous because of the brief, limited Oscar-qualifying run.

I'm reminded of The New World, which wasn't an Oscar favorite.

Sony has already shipped Animal Kingdom screeners. I hope Academy members sit down and watch it. What a movie. Super-compelling, dark, twisty, perfectly acted. I prefer it to Inception and The Social Network.

I at least hope they don't snub Jacki Weaver in Best Supporting Actress.

Doubt it. It only has 79 at BFCA.
