John Travolta is getting some pretty good buzz for Hairspray.

A golden globe nomination seems all but assured for him if he's listed as lead.

Thank god for Felicity Huffman's Best Actress nomination for Transamerica clearing that up.

 Forgot about Huffman. He might win too, since the actor lineup looks to be drama heavy.

There aren't any other musicals aside from Across the Universe coming out this year are there? If so then yeah I wouldn't be surprised at all if he wins, especially if the film becomes a 100+ million earner.

Is there any other performer aside Linda Hunt (who won) that got nominated for playing a character of the opposite sex? Not counting those pretending to be the other sex or transgender/sexual ones. John Travolta would be a kick-ass nomination.

I just realized there is also Sweeney Todd. That changes my perspective quite a bit, as Burton/Depp combo is hard to resist for Foreign Press.

How crowded we're going to get in the GG Musical/Comedy category? We already have Once, Waitress, Knocked Up, Ratatouille, Hairspray, and The Simpsons.

Well, the creation of the Animation category counts out Ratatouille and Simpsons. Still, that leaves the other four and another 5 months in the year.

The Simpsons will sweep. Picture, Screenplay, Animated Film, Sound Editing are all locks.

I'd say Hot Fuzz as well, but then I remember that Shaun of the Dead didn't get nominated. Such a shame. :disgust:

And considering Sweeney Todd is being released on Dec 21st, a week after GG's announcement, I can't see how it could be ignored, so it's going to be tough for the rest of films.

I think the lack of well-reviewed drama among wide releases so far this year makes Away from Her stand out even more. I expect it to make a big comeback in the award season, and Julie Christie not only is a nomination lock, but stands a good chance at winning, unless academy thinks the trend of older women getting recognized should stop at one year.

I don't see Away from Her going farther than an Actress nom, mainly because the box office was rather unimpressive (It couldn't even make it to $5 million), which is a shame since it's such a damn good movie. Christie seems like the perfect nom-but-no-win nominee though.

It's not going to be another The Queen, but could be like Monster or Monster's Ball. Actress isn't a category that needs much B.O. or accompanying nominations, and Christie should dominate critics awards. I see her as a bigger contender than Imelda Staunton was in 2005.

If Julie Christie could get a nomination for Afterglow (another movie barely anyone saw), I would think she's practically locked for a nom this year.

Staunton is actually a pretty good comparison. That one didn't even make $4 million if I'm not mistaken (Nope, I'm not), and that was in prime Oscar season. If Lionsgate times the DVD release right she should definitely make it (Checked Amazon, it's coming out on Sept. 11, so DVD won't help; still, it won't hurt).

If Bourne keeps getting these kinds of reviews, I'd like to see Matt Damon with a nod eventually. Poor guy.

He deserved to win for Good Will Hunting, at least he got a nom.

Over Jack? I don't know about that. But he was certainly great. That was actually a great year for actors: I loved Peter Fonda and Dustin Hoffman as well.

Yeah it was a very good year for acting, close all around.

I still can't believe that all 3 of the male leads in L.A. Confidential were snubbed for Best Actor. Kim Basinger was worse than all of them and she won the damn award.

Ratatouille won't but should be nominated, I hate the narrow-minded Academy

It will probably win Animated.

Which is one more Oscar than 99% of all the motion pictures released out there will get this year.

So I don't feel bad for it.
