DiCaprio as Roosevelt? I like Leo, but I am not seeing that.

I just think of Teddy from Arsenic and Old Lace yelling "CHARGE" when I think of Teddy Roosevelt.

Teddy was about 5'8" and 200 lbs., and not boy-ish looking like Leo is, so the makeup people have their work cut out for them.

We could finally see DiCaprio get an oscar. If he actually chubs up for the role that would get him major points, if he just ends up putting on a fat suit........ not so much.

Yes, he'd be wise to go the De Niro route and gain the weight, and I'm sure Marty would encourage that.

The major problem I have with the Maryt/Leo relationship is that I am not sure it leads to good roles for Leo. Leo was perfect for the Aviator, but merely meh in Gangs of New York. Leo has talent, I've been a huge fan of his since he should have won the Oscar for What's Eaitng Gilbert Grape (ok, yes i watched him on Growing Pains), and I like that he goign for adult roles, btut here is something to be said for picking things which suit you.

I hope its a good film since i like Leo and Marty, so thus far they are 1-1 for collaborations.

Though I really like DiCaprio, he's a great actor, he wouldnt be the actor he is today if it wasnt for Marty, he grew as an actor thanks to him.

DiCaprio was really good in This Boy's Life, What's Eating Gilbert Grape (he scored a well deserved Oscar nom), and The Basketball Diaries all before Scorsese. Let's not forget Titanic.

In the Aviator, Scorsese definitely brought out hte best in him, in GoNY, DiCaprio was one of many that were just cannon fodder to Day-Lewis. Then again, I thought the problm there was that his character Amsterdam was poorly written, not given Leo much to do.

I don't agree that Scorses made him a great actor, I think Loe's been good for awhile. I think Dicaptio major problem has been that he hasn;t looke dhis age, he looked so young for so long and the Titanic backlash, but he been picking mostly good projects his whole career, even his films that I didn't like (Romeo + Juliet, The Beach), I can see why he took them.

I do think Scorsese has helped filmgoers see DiCaprio as an adult.

That said, The Departed is going to first itme I enter a theater in like 2 months, Oct 6th cannot get here fast enough.

My boyfriend must be channeling thoughts to you, he left me a long message yeserday telling me I needed to run out and see Half Nelson, his best of the year, and then see Little Miss Sunshine.

I only get to see the departed because its a Holiday weekend, and I get Monday, its that kind of semester for me. *sigh*

Heh. I've been wanting to see Half Nelson and The Illusionist (I'm not sure why I haven't), but I'll probably just be waiting for DVD.

But Little Miss Sunshine is so so so good, oyu woudl dig it.

It’s a pleasure to report that "The Departed," the gritty crime-gangster drama, is Martin Scorsese’s best film since the 1990 “The GoodFellas,“ to which the new film bears loose resemblance in thematic rather than stylistic terms.

After two quasi-epics, “Gangs of New York” and “Aviator,” both of which Oscar-nominated, and both flawed for different reasons, Scorsese is back on terra firma with a movie that’s right up his alley, one that’s linked directly not only to “GoodFellas,” but also to “Mean Streets,” back in 1973.

Like Michael Mann (who, incidentally, produced Scorsese’s “Aviator”), Scorsese is one of American cinema’s strongest proponents of film noir, infusing most of his films with darkly humorous approach and quintessentially noirish themes, motifs, and visuals. Nonetheless, unlike Mann, particularly in his last, disappointing effort, “Miami Vice,” in which striking style triumphed over a routine narrative, Scorsese is trying to find new subjects, with varying degrees of success, to which he can apply his singular noirish paradigm.

The story of "The Departed" is vaguely based on the 2002 brilliant Hong Kong thriller, "Infernal Affairs," which achieved great success in Asia before being released (briefly) in the U.S. in 2004. The collaboration with writer William Monahan (“Kingdom of Heaven”), an Irish-American native of Boston, proves fruitful in ways that the teaming with Paul Schrader was a generation ago in movies like “Taxi Driver” and “Raging Bull.” Monahan and Scorsese treat their movie as one inspired by “Internal Affairs,” rather than a remake per se.

Blindly rooting for a film is fine. Attacking other films (and people rotting for those films) because (in the person's opinion) they pose a "threat" to "your" film, that is moronic fanboyism.

Your boyfriend is a smart guy. Half Nelson and Little Miss Sunshine are my #1 and #2.

Ah well, I still don't see The Departed winning either Director or Picture, unless it turns out a bona fide $100+ million grosser ans gets 85% RT reviews or so at the sam time. Then it has a chance. As it stands, it is more likely to go the Gangs of New York route (i.e, many noms, not so many wins), though it might win an Oscar or two. Currently, I'd say Nicholson is the most likely of the film to win anything (considering, no matter how good he is, DiCaprio won't win against Whitaker and O'Toole). The chances for Picture and Director are rather small, however chances at noms are very good.

I wasnt trying to defend the guy, I was just stating that he IS a fanboy, yet doesnt think he is and though someone calls you a fanboy doesnt mean you have to get so upset about it since everyone is a fanboy in one way or another rooting for a specific flm.
