I fear Match Point is starting a couple of weeks too late. It should go limited this past weekend, as it will surely do much better than what The Producers had.

Looks like Brokeback might keep the top spot in this race as well. I'd be compltely amazed if it keeps up the most #1's. That would be hard to overcome.

I know it's been gaining steam as of late, but still... at History of Violence. Wow!

King Kong is also showing up VERY strong. I'm really starting to feel comfortable with a nod now. The only thing that could take its place is a late ressurection of New World or Match Point or, as it's becoming the ultimate threat, positive momentum for Violence.

Walk the Line at 11 isn't bad, considering it's not considered a critical favorite.

It actually appeared on only 2 lists so far (Corliss + Shawn Edwards of Fox-TV), but I'll be crossing my fingers for ya. ;)

Hey, I know Engin is lurking around. :)

You should take my name out from the list of contributors since I haven't done any to help this year.

To my surprise Good Night, and Good Luck has not recieve a single #1 yet. That doesn't bode too well.

hehe. I remember you posted once or twice before maybe a year or so ago.
Or my memory is playing tricks on me again....

I'm a huge fan btw. I found your 2002 page and think was the first one to post it at BOM.
All the work is truly appreciated. Thanks!!

Kris Tapley, now writing for both Variety and MCN, already gave his best and worst films of the year, and he just finished posting his own awards:

As a long time Oscarwatch lurker (3 years? more?) I feel like I know the personalities at that site even if they don't know me. It however has not been as fun since the Mistress left. I have to say, I've never been a fan of Kris' thoughts on film, and while there's definately some choices here I agree with, I would actually put Last Days on my list of 10 worst films of the year. I'm not a Van Sant hater, I thought Elephant was just short of brilliance, but ... ugh... Last Days... ugh.

well thinking logically that makes sense as the 20% or so % of critics who liked the movie probably are those > remember these are individual lists so the mediocre reviews don't really apply until we see the % of worst movies of the year to compare the best / worst.

and on a side note, it just was on Newsweek Top 5 Most Disappointing Movies.

Major Update: http://www.criticstop10.net/2005/index.htm

A History of Violence is officially the critics' darling right now, beating out Brokeback Mountain.

King Kong dropped down but still at #9. Munich is a bit low on the list at #13.

Walk the Line has fallen WAY down to tied at #31. I'm not even so sure this will get a Best Picture nomination.

PEACE, Mike.

Yeah, the buzz for Walk the Line has died down considerably. James Mangold is even hardly mentioned as a contender for BD. The lowest Engin-compiled ranking ever for a best picture nomination is 19 from last year's Ray, and Ray had 7 No. 1s, while Walk the Line has none right now.
