Post Is Meryl Streep a lock for nomination?
If the reviews are any indication, Meryl Streep delivered again in The Devil Wears Prada:

"Streep single-handedly elevates this sitcomy but tolerably entertaining adaptation of Lauren Weisberger's bestselling 2003 roman a clef." -- Todd McCarthy, VARIETY

"It's Streep who pops our flashbulbs." -- Lisa Schwarzbaum, ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY

"Everyone knows that Meryl Streep is the high priestess of drama, but she never gets enough credit for her comedy skills. That should change with The Devil Wears Prada." -- Peter Travers, ROLLING STONE

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_devil_wears_prada/

GG nomination is a given. Besides Dreamgirls, which is an ensemble, The Musical/Comedy category isn't that strong, and GG loves her at least as much as the academy does. Being also in A Prairie Home Companion (haven't seen, so don't know how significant her part is), she is unlikely to be forgotten in critics awards, especially those who like to group multiple roles together. The box office prospect for The Devil Wears Prada is pretty strong. So overall, I think there is a good chance she will be nominated once again and be a representative for the first half of the season.

If The Devil Wears Prada is strong enough both with critics (which appears likely) and audiences (also probably likely), I could definitely see her getting yet another nomination. If anyone can do it, it's Meryl Streep.

Not to mention this type of thing happened recently, with Renee Zellweger getting an Oscar nomination for a light comedy with Bridget Jones's Diary.

Depends on the movie itself IMO, if it stays strong with the critics. If it turns into like a 40%-50% score, with many calling it a glorified sitcom, probably not. Something's Gotta Give gotta away with trashing, but that was thanks to being released at the end of the year.

I don't know. At this point with upcoming dramatic performances from Nicole Kidman, Kate Winslet, Annette Bening, Cate Blanchett, Naomi Watts, Natalie Portman, etc. it seems like this could be an extremely competitive year. Even a great performance could be overlooked, esp. since the feeling is Streep isn't past due, no matter how deserving she is. But this is Streep, so anything is possible.

Maybe she'll run for supporting, in which case she'll have a really great shot at a nom.

Only if there aren't enough major contenders at the end of the year. Otherwise I think it'll go the way of The Manchurian Candidate, too mainstream plus it's a summer release.

The Devil Wears Prada is at 80% at Rotten Tomatoes with 43 fresh reviews out of 55. Looks very good.

I think they're going to be campaigning for a Supporting Actress nomination for Meryl. Despite Streep being first-billed, Anne Hathaway seems like the main lead.

Doubt it. They said the same thing about her supporting role in Manchurian Candidate, which had much more love, and wasn't, well, a chick flic. I'd like to see her get a nomination this year. And she's got several good roles including Prada and Prairie Home, but nothing is a lock yet.

Manchurian? She was terribly underused and nothing spectacular, imo. If she steals this show with a better performance, I say she's got a solid shot.

There is no comparison between the Manchurian Candidate and The Devil Wears Prada, in terms of her roles. Her Manchurian role was pretty small, she blended into the ensemble (there were other great cast members, as good as she is), and like sunnier said, she really got nothing good to work with.

Here, in Devil, she has an incredibly showy, meaty role, that critics are saying you have to see, even if the movie as a whole doesn't appeal. Not saying she will get a nom, but she definately has a better chance here than with the Manchurian Candidate, in my opinion.

PEACE, Mike.

I wouldn't go so far as to say a lock for a nomination, but I would definately say that any time Meryl gets press for a role then she instantly becomes a big contendor.

I could see Devil Wears Prada doing well at the Globes and any show that gives a leg up to comedy.

The Academy has a short memory though, if this was being released in November I'd say she was super, super strong, but in June/July I'm not so sure.

It would really help if Devil is a relative hit.

The reception to this movie really surprises me. I am even semi interested in going to see it :)

Also The Manchurian Candidate released right at a time where academy might have just gotten a little tired of Streep after Adaptation and 3 nominations in 5 years.

I agree she will have a better chance for a Supporting nom, and a showy comedy role is definitely attention-grabber and a change for Meryl. She apparently delivered in A Prairie Home Companion as well, and that will help.

Doesn't she have Flora Plum later this year or something?

It has been delayed and is still in pre-production, according to IMDb. She has a voice role in Ant Bully, but other than that, I don't think any of her upcoming films will be released this year.

The review I read today on CNN said something like "the film should have been about Steep's character".

I saw it.

It's Oscar worthy. Very, very showy. If only the film revolved around her. Not sure if there is enough meat for a supporting nom, but I'd put money on it at this point. She is multidimensional, twisted perfection.

If people have the read the book they'll realize that there is a depth Streep adds ot the chracter that didn't exist on hte page. The look Streep gives in this film are a performance alone. This is a hsowy role without the screaming, I like how Streep portrays the characters displeasure in practically a whisper at points. Superb work.

Streep should have won many other times she was rightfully nominated, but I think the Oscar voters have said "Geez, we can't keep giving her Oscars every year!" Maybe this year they will, especially if it is for a supporting role.

I say yes - she will get the Oscar nom, but no Oscar - it's a body of work thing for this year's 3 films and for her ongoing mission to save Hollywood acting from mediocrity...

She deserves something, but I don't really respect the oscars, so it doesn't matter to me here.
