Penelope Cruz will win the Oscar, as sure as Rod is gay!

There is an unwritten law that Tom Cruise's exs must absolutely win an Oscar. You listening Katie?

Plus, the young always end up winning against old British women, except in years when the opposite is true.

As of now, I see Best Actress playing out this way...

Penelope Cruz (Volver)
Ashley Judd (Bug)
***Helen Mirren (The Queen)***
Meryl Streep (The Devil Wears Prada)
Kate Winslet (Little Children)

the last two don't matter, the race is going to come between 3 women...

Helen Mirren
Penelope Cruz
Kate Winslet

Both Kate and Cruz have very strong things going for them that could really just drive them to the win.

But I do think that Cruz and Winslet will cancell each other out with the young vote and the win will go to Mirren. At this point though, Mirren certainly has this odd edge since her performance is just unanimously praised.

I'm interested in which actress will receive the fifth Best Actress nomination. I'd say Penelope Cruz, Helen Mirren, Meryl Streep, and Kate Winslet are guaranteed nominations, but the fifth could go to Ashley Judd, Beyonce Knowles, or another actress entirely.

Wait... Is Annette Bening going Lead or Supporting for Running with Scissors?

That'd be my dream lineup

Annette might be getting some raves (along with the rest of the cast), but the film itself is going to sink so, unless she pulls a similar feat to Sean Penn with I Am Sam, she's out...

In my opinion, all the female leads in 'Volver' deserve a Best Actress nomination. A wonderful acted and directed film.
In this case I completely agree with Box.

I kinda hope Winslet wins. Maybe even just for a pity win since she has been nominated so many times already.

I would love to see Winslet win as well, though I haven't seen Little Children yet.

I also would love to see Renee Zellweger nominated for Miss Potter.

I haven't seen any of these performances so I can't just yet say how I will feel in the future, but I think I may suprisingly find myself not rooting for KAte Winslet even if only for the fact that she's still VERY young and we all know she has still alot more in her and we want to see her churning out hit after hit of a performance rather than give her a pity win.

Does anyone think Kate Winslet, much later on, could be among the most nominates actors/actresses in Oscar history?
I think if she keeps at it, she's looking at an easy 9-10 career nominations.

She's supposedly the only actress under 30 to get 4 nominations... at that rate and granted she'll be acting until she's 60, she'll have lots of nominations.

Winslet is the new Streep.

Mirren will win, but I'd love to see Penelope take it home.

Nicole Kidman may have won an Oscar, but Mimi Rogers didn't.

Honestly, depends on momentum. Cruz gets nothing if Volver has a botched release. If Volver goes on to break 10 million and eclipse Talk to Her, and is at its peak in late December, I see Penelope taking it over Mirren. I can't weigh in on Winslet yet, as there is no way to really gage the reception of movie.

I agree, zennier. Reaction will be way too mixed for it to become a serious contender. As of now, here are my revised Best Actress predictions...

Penélope Cruz, Volver
Judi Dench, Notes on a Scandal
Helen Mirren, The Queen
Meryl Streep, The Devil Wears Prada
Naomi Watts, The Painted Veil
(Alt.: Kate Winslet, Little Children)

I'm a Cruz fan all the way, but while the European set has declared her a winner, here in the US it seems Volver is a non issue. It's just not getting out there. She'll get the nomination but that's all. Given the next few weeks I expect her to get stomped on at the various awards coming up, which is a pity. I would love for Cruz to walk away with the Oscar but I think she really is a dark horse. As many have said it seems the critics have already made their choice and Mirren is the lock.
