With nothing much to do, I was just researching through Oscar history, and I never realized it before, but 1975 is probably the most complete and best Oscar show ever. It was truly fantastic.
The Best Picture nominees:
One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest
Jaws
Dog Day Afternoon
Nashville
Barry Lyndon
I believe what makes this year so great was that in years like 62 or 94, those may have had 2 or 3 monstrous movies but the rest of the noms behind them was filler. In 75 there was 4 total masterpieces by today's standards all in one year, and the 5th nom a Stanley Kubrick film, which is worthy enough on it's own.
In the show itself you had Jack Nicholson winning his first Oscar, and Cuckoo's Nest itself being one of the only films to sweep the top 5 awards. You had the biggest movie of all time in Jaws, for the first time Spielberg making his mark on the scene. Altman created probably his best movie ever and the one of the best ensemble movies ever. Dog Day Afternoon, no explanation needed. 75 also had the oldest nominee and winner ever, George Burns. 1975 had no issues with too entertaining of films, films people could actually love, it just nominated the best. 1975 was a friggin brilliant year! I know 2001 was great, as was 1994, but honestly I think 1975 is above them.

Yeah thats a fantastic year come to think of it. I havnt seen Dog Day Afternoon or Barry Lyndon so need to check them out. Also agree - 1994 and 2001 are two of my favourite movie years ever.

Good idea for a thread, discussing what everyones favorite year was.
75' is up there for sure
Im keen to 95'
Forrest Gump, Pulpfiction, and Shawshank? Whoa, all three are in my top 10.
Then you also got Martin Landau winning best supporting in Ed Wood, brilliant
Also liked 2000, American Beauty getting the big ones and Matrix with the much deserved tech awards ( should've been nominated for picture )
Obviously loved seeing Eastwood win for M$B in 05', that was just awsome.

2000 is my favorite. I consider American Beauty to be among the best films ever made and The Green Mile and The Sixth Sense are both in my all-time Top 30. Like Kill, I wish The Matrix was nominated for Best Picture. It certainly would have deserved it. I got a kick out of it sweeping the techs.

1. barry lyndon
2. jaws

I'm still mad that JAWS lost.
But as for great years, you can't ignore 1994. Pulp Fiction, Shawshank and Forrest Gump were great films and if any of them had won, it would have been fine with me.
1999 was another beauty. Sixth Sense, American Beauty and The Matrix. I know the Matrix wasn't nominated either, but it should have been.

I just realized how well Nashville was received by award groups, winning BP and BD at NY, NSFC, and NBR, as well as freaking 11 GG nominations (still 9 even not counting the debut categories that doesn't exist now). How did it not win Best Supporting Actress at oscar? Must be a vote split.
