Anthony Hopkins to receive Cecil B. DeMille Award

Associated Press

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. - Actor Anthony Hopkins may want to celebrate his latest honor with some fava beans and a nice chianti.

Hopkins, who won an Oscar for his portrayal of the flesh-eating Hannibal Lecter in "The Silence of the Lambs," will receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement at the 63rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Actress Geena Davis battled laryngitis to make the announcement Wednesday at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

Nominated for six Golden Globes since 1978, Hopkins is arguably the greatest living film actor, said Philip Berk, president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which presents the Golden Globes.

"It's a choice I am particularly proud of," Berk said. "It's an honor to us as well as to him."

Hopkins will receive the award at the Golden Globe Awards on Jan. 16, 2006.

Dakota Johnson, daughter Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson, was named Miss Golden Globe. She will assist in the awards ceremony and is the first daughter of a former Miss Golden Globe to be selected.

Griffith, daughter of actress Tippi Hedren, was selected in 1975.

Sweet, though he isn't 'the greatest film actor alive'. Jack Nicholson and Tom Hanks and Gene Hackman and Robert DeNiro are above him in that department.

And yeah, Jodie would be a good choice.

Hopkins To Quit After Shakespeare Role?

Welsh actor Sir Anthony Hopkins may be planning to quit acting after starring in William Shakespeare's tragedy King Lear. Hopkins has played the aging British king in the theatre and admits he wasn't completely happy with his performance and would like the chance to play Lear again on the silver screen. He tells Total Film magazine, "(I played Lear before) badly... no, it was OK. But I want do to Lear, then maybe say, 'Adios.' I want to see what I've got left in me. Make sure I had a good go at it. I know somebody that's interested in producing it, one of the money guys at Miramax. I think it would be interesting to go back to the old traditional thing of setting it in Denmark or a craggy area of Britain, shoot it near the coasts in winter, set it in the dark ages."
