4 First Time Nominees Winning In The Acting Categories
It happened in 1962.
It [s]could very well[/s] with almost certainty will happen again this year.

No.
You should rather say:
It WILL happen.
I mean neither Ledger nor Hoffman were nominated and one of them will win.
Witherspoon, Huffman and Knightley are all receiving their first noms. None outside of them will win.
Clooney, Giamatti, Dillon, Gyllenhaal...the only ones I see possibly winning Supporting Actor. All first-time nominees.
Best Supporting Actress - Amy Adams or Michelle Williams. First-time nominees.

I'd love to see Joan Allen pulling a HUGE upset if nominated.. eheh (nothing against Reese - I love her and this is her big shot...)
but yeah, it seems like it'll happen for the first time in more than 4 decades..

Throw in Maria Bello and Rachel Weisz, who both have a chance at winning.

I think Don Cheadle is the extreme dark-horse spoiler in this race.

Ya, I agree... though at this point it's almost a given
Seriously, the race for the nods is quite interesting. But we already know who the race is gonna come down to Oscar night, so February might be pretty dull!

Going back 10 years, we had 10 last year (11 if you count Jaime twice), 11 in 2003, 11 in 1999, 12 in 1997, 10 in 1996, and in 1995 there were 15.
So it looks like the most since 1995.

For acting in Crash?!
I hope you're joking, he wasn't even that good in it.

If the actor nominees were Hoffman, Strathairn, Howard, Ledger and Phoenix, Phoenix would be the only second-time nominee.
So, yes.
