Maybe, but Hoffman is a big contendor here and although Ledger's buzz is good, it isn't as good as Hoffman's

And there's the whole "it's Heath Ledger" thing to overcome, which looms large.

I meant to say Hoffmans died down early and he looked iffy, but now he's resurged and its Ledger best competition (I am writing a ten page term paper and posting, go me).

Also a big question is how ledger previous work willplay, he's finally playing mature adult characters and not being in crap films, will that help him or hurt him.

Hoffman like Giamatti has been good over and over again, and while this year should be his year, last year should have seen Giamatti at leat get a nomination. I think with BM being the stronger ovreall contender this coudl help push ledger over the edge. All I hear abotu Capote is how good Hoffman is, not how good the film is.

I have to say that Ledger was really good in Monster's Ball and Ned Kelly, and passible in Four Feathers and Lords of Dogtown.

But he has stuff like The Order, The Patriot and A Knight's Tale in there!

Actually, I think Giamatti is now a force in Best Supporting Actor. The poor guy, he did American Splendor and Sideways back to back and NADA.

Hoffman IS Capote. That's the key for me. Not an actor playing a role but becoming the role.

i think prior tot his year he was just another young actor, and now he's suddenly this mature adult, with a strong performance, a baby, his whole attitude is different, and I think this helps him.

I like Hoffman, I am jsut not sure he can win, I think he unilke Giamatti will get the nom, but I think he needs to keep the buzz going for the win. The more critics awards, the better, b/c when his buzz died down around October I feared he was slated to be this year's Giamatti.

I've nver seen any of the first four films you mentioned (well the first five) but I did see the last two.

See Monster's Ball, if anything for the most disgusting sex scene ever put to screen. Ledger is in it for only a few minutes though, but it is power.

Then see Ned Kelly if you have time, for a great performance from Ledger, Watts and surprisngly Bloom.

Really, Bloom dosen't suck.Its on my to watch list, but I rent movies so rarely then I'll see it, just not soon.

I miss when I had time for netflix, damn school.

Watts is wasted in Ned Kelly and Bloom, while better than usual, is still bad.

Ledger is good in it, though. The movie itself is mediocre.

Ledger was also amazing in Lords of Dogtown earlier this year and delivered the best performance in The Brothers Grimm.

Terrance is a good bet.

I ALWAYS thought he was the dark horse and underdog for a nom.

The thing is he isn't just the "it" or breakout actor of the year in the public's eye; he has gained serious industry cred this year which counts for alot (think Felicity Huffman, even though she had the cred for a long time and people just didn't know it).

10 whole pages in this thread and not one mention of Steve Carell's outstanding work in The 40 Year-Old Virgin - if the Academy had any sense (which of course it doesn't), he should be at the top of the nomination list for best actor...

I would actually agree with this, Carell was positively endearing in that film. He won't get a nomination, obviously.

I'm going back and forth between Eric Bana and Terrence Howard. I think one will make it over the other. Howard seems to have more buzz, even though I thought Bana was largely the heart and soul of Munich.

I might be wrong...but I have yet to see a single nomination for Bana at any awards around...

I'm sticking with Howard. Too much buzz at the moment for academy to ignore, especially considering the ballots were just mailed out, and a large percentage of them will be returned within the first week.

Terrence Howard was awesome in Hustle & Flow and was also okay in Crash too...

Heh, even Get Rich or Die Tryin', even though the reception for it wasn't great, nearly every review singled him out as stealing the show, or at least the scenes he was in.

Yep, 2005 was certainly Terrence Howard's year among other things. He delivered in all movies he was in and he'd really deserve a nom for H&F, moreso than for Crash.

I honestly am not even sure if Phoenix will get a nomination. Foxx surpassed his performance in every was conceivable, and didn't get the rug pulled under him by a supporting actress. That and the film itself seemed a bit stronger... Then again, it's probably me just wishing both Bana and Howard could get in.

Bana getting in would be similar to last year and Eastwood because Bana has really no precursor noms at all, but Eastwood is a veteran, so I wouldn't count on it.

The last slot seems to be down to Terrence Howard and Jeff Daniels.

I'm still going with Howard, but if Daniels has been gaining buzz like crazy lately. If he gets the SAG nom, watch out....

Bana couldn't even keep a consistent accent in Munich...
