So you are saying that many of the reviews up on RT for Titanic are not the original reviews for the movie? That seems a bit strange. Not saying you are wrong but where did you hear this? I've never heard of critics redoing their reviews after the movie becomes a hit.

Anything released before 1998 or 1999 is suspect because Rotten Tomatoes didn't exist back then, and a lot of the "online reviewers" didn't exist either. Some go back years later and add reviews to increase their portfolio and also it doesn't really "map" to how RT works now because there are a lot of current reviewers who are not represented there.

It's one of those things where... many people who liked the movie have taken the time to fill in a back-review for Titanic, but it only represents the people that have actually taken the time to go back and fill in the data, vs. a new movie, which EVERYONE takes the time to fill in (if they can).

I understand that, but Xiayun seemed to be implying that people had changed their reviews after it came out. While the overall score might not be as reliable as newer films, you can still compare specific reviewers. It won't help in a quantitative analysis but can help get a sense of how certain reviewers see each. And it's still fascinating how many major reviewers gave Titanic a marginal or moderate thumbs up and not a rave.

Not an official review, but:

"I'm not going to josh you and say my holy-mother-of-God comment could have meant I hated The New World, but I can't tell a lie. The film is outstanding. Also a difficult film but insanely rewarding if you give yourself over to it. Everyone I know who's seen it either loves it through and through (like Nick and I) or loves only the beginning and the end. They seem to have problems with the middle stretch, probably because the film loses a little bit of its aesthetic elasticity during this part, but it makes sense given the cultural vice Pocahontas is put in."

From Ed at Slant, apparently...

So is there a consensus that The Producers is DOA?

If there's only room for one popular film, it's Kong for sure. Which leaves The Producers (which I predict will break $100 Mill with good-great reviews) stranded.

Munich, Kong and The Producers are all Universal (well... Munich is Universal/Dreamworks). The Producers may make $100 million, but it won't do that until after it is released on Jan 13th (right?) and I believe the ballots are due the most week (and most are turned in even earlier. So box office can't really have too much of an effect on Producers.

Kong + Producers won't happen on the same ballot, so I think it boils down to getting two "musical/comedy" films nominated vs a larger box office movie. Two "remakes" and two both fantasy and musical has been awarded in the last few years pretty well... I dunno.

Personally, I think the Memoirs spot is the weak one at this particular moment and I feel that would be replaced by a bigger production, not a musical.

Since Memoirs isn't dead at the moment, it's an uphill battle for both movies.

Looks good. Dissention often means good things for a movie when looking at the tomatometer, as far as I'm concerned. I'm more wary of the movies that maintain over 90%, like the overrated Spiderman 2, Hero and Million Dollar Baby. In fact, those King Kong raves are starting to worry me ;) .

82% now with a 7.7 average rating. Pretty good, and it also shares another similarity with Munich in that Variety gave both negative reviews.

Its Metacritic score is 73, with 6 reviews... not bad at all, so far (better than I expected at least)..
