I don't think box office should factor into any of the decisions because the award is supposed to give small films more exposure.

No. I think impact will though. Which is why I'm expecting Brokeback Mountain or Good Night.

The cynical side of me says that they will make a big deal out of these two because these are the two the general audience watchign the show will be most familiar with.

Which is sad IMO, even though I very much like GNAGL. This is one award that films like Junebug and Mysterious Skin should get as much opportunity as possible. Instead, even they try to be closer to Oscar and award big-name mid-level "indies".

Satellite nominations are Thursday. That should be fun since it has like 100 categories with 10 nominees each (ok, I'm exaggerating).

Ahem, that's the Oscar Winning Pearl Harbor to you two.

Monsters Inc. was robbed.

Anyway...

I thought Junebug could get First feature award nomination, but I guess hoyay for Amy Adams!

I'll be really confused when they announce Felicity Huffman and Philip Seymour Hoffman as the winners. Their names sound very much alike phonetically.

Wow I failed to realize it was THAT time of year again!!!!!

I completely forgot National Board of Review was right around the corner as well.

The best picture lineup is interesting this year because all films have a shot at the Oscars, even if not in the best picture category.

No screenplay nomination for Brokeback Mountain? That's...interesting.

Good for Felicity Huffman

The IFP always reward the 'major' independent film with the important awards. The one that's made a big splash with awards, money, or both.
2005-Sideways
2004-Lost In Translation
2003- Far From Heaven
2002-Memento
2001-Crouching Tiger

Which probably means Brokeback has it in the bag.

Has a movie that's won ISA ever won Best Picture at the Oscars?

I don't believe so.

Independent films pretty much never win best picture.

The closest that I can come up with is Platoon, which wasn't nominated for Best Picture, but won for Best Director in the ISA and went on to win big everywhere.

Actually, you are wrong, but you pointed out the right film.

Platoon won Oscars for

Director
Editing
Picture
Sound

Platoon won ISA for

Cinematography
Director
Feature
Screenplay

So yeah, the answer is Platoon. Thanks Mav :D

Very nice for Brokeback Mountain! I'm especially pleased with Michelle Williams' Supporting Actress nod.

Mysterious Skin deserved more than one nod, but I'm glad it at least has something.

The nomination for the Me & You & Everyone We Know screenplay is a joke! That is the most sickeningly pretentious piece of garbage of the year! Ugh! I cannot believe it has been embraced like it has. It deserves to be missed! I kind of loathe that film. It fits the bill to a T as to what a pretentious film is. It is pathetic! It better not win because then I'll be really pissed.

Nice for The Squid & The Whale. It will probably receive some Oscar attention now.

I'm also glad to see Grizzly Man get noticed by them. I was shocked it wasn't even one of the 15 finalists for the Documentary award at the Oscars. I don't see how that could be. It had rave reviews, much better reviews than a lot of the chosen ones. This was brought up in the recent issue of Entertainment Weekly and Arthur Dong, one of the documentary branch's governors, said "not enough voters thought it was Oscar-worthy." That seems ridiculous though considering fluff docs like March of The Penguins and Mad Hot Ballroom made the list. I know Grizzly Man wouldn't win (March of The Penguins has it in the bag since it's easily the biggest documentary of the year and they like to award the most popular, and I can't say this even bothers me in this case because Penguins did have great reviews and with its breakout success I'd say it deserves the award), but I still expected it would be one of the final 5 nominees, yet it wasn't even one of the final 15.

I like the Independent Spirit Awards. They actually give a lot more great, independent films a chance, unlike the Oscars, which tends to honor the most popular films. And I happened to catch the ISA's running on IFC last year and it was really fun to watch. I liked the laid back, casual environment and it just seemed like everyone was having a blast. It didn't seem as stuffy as the Oscars. I loved the funny songs they made up and performed about each of the Best Feature nominees.

Is Match Point even elliglible ?

I know it's Woody Allen, but it's not set in America, the cast for the most part is not American. So I wonder about producers etc, and I forget the rules for what makes a film foreign or not at the ISAs.

Crouching Tiger won.

The only limitation is "independent film" and a certain budget limitation (Eternal Sunshine cost too much).

Crouching Tiger won. So I assume Match Point is eligible.

I agree with the notion that it wasn't necessarily seen by everyone. But I'm also just not convinced it has much award power.
