Well I thought the movie was very well made but Allen's performance was the weakest of the entire movie and brought it down. There's a difference between being nasty and bitchy in a movie and being so utterly terrible and nasty that she became almost cartoonish.

Now that it is come and gone, it's safe to say this is not going to get any nominations come next Oscar. It just was greeted as an above average romantic comedy that didn't make much of a dent critically or commercially. One thing that kept it from being taken too seriously was an overly suburban atmosphere to the whole thing.

I disagree.

The movie did well enough at the box office for the type of film it is, and Joan Allen received universal praise ofr her performance. And I think she's has an EXCELLENT shot at a nomination, especially with a Golden Globe nomination being almost a sure thing.

I also wouldn't count out Kevin Costner.

I completely disagree with the statement that Allen was the worst part of the movie. She wasn't the best, that would be the writing for her character.

But I also don't strongly agree that it's going to do something at the Oscars.

I think Joan Allen won't be nominated. She may be considered but mainly because she might pull off a GG nom and that's it. I think we have stronger women this year or at least more hyped and "famous." Don't get my thoughts on politics mixed up with my own views on acting and film. I never said she wasn't good, I thought she was absolutely terrific.

I think the best chance at any nomination would be Kevin Costner and the irnoy of the movie is that I think he will just miss out on the consideration because he WON'T probably be nominated in the Supporting category for GG because they only have 1 Supporting Actor category. Nontheless, I still say he is the film's strongest chance for a nod.

Yeah, she'll got a GG nom if it's comedy, no question. Oscar nomination though, I'm not feeling so much. As for the performance, why was she so great? She had tons of emotion, but I thought that she was so emotional and so much of a bitchy wreck that she became a caricature, and that's both the performance and her. There was just no subtlety to the character whatsoever.

I'd say Allen has a better than average chance at a nomination. She's playing a character type she hasn't played before, she's a very respected actress, and she has that whole 'overdue' status thing going for her. As I've said before, she'll probably be this year's Annette Bening - veteran respected actress nominated many times who gets beat out by a younger actress. Not sure who that will be yet.

That doesn't mean her performance was bad, though, MovieDude.

She was bad because her character was unlikeable?

I thought Terry was supposed to come off as a tad cartoonish.
