Post Re: Fact: there will be no Picture/Director split this year
Q: Is it just me, or did Inarritu vulture BD?

A split made sense to me if The Revenant won BP and George Miller (or, the not-even-nominated Ridley Scott) won BD. But not the other way around. What's the rationale for The Revenant as BD material - over Spotlight or Mad Max - which were more compelling in the other common categories besides Cinematography?

If it's about the difficulty of the production... didn't voters kind-of say that's not important when they passed over Linklater's 12-yr production?

He's a troll.

The Revenant, for it being overrated and all, still has stronger direction than Spotlight. The direction was good, very good, though I wouldn't have given him the Oscar still.

I learned to hate Inarritu during this awards season.

Innaritu winning for The Revenant is the equivalent of acting Oscars like Eddie Redmayne for The Theory of Everything, highest effort level is not the same as best director. I feel a lot of the things that made the film not reach its potential were probably Innaritu mistakes at meat and potatoes storytelling things, that McCarthy subtly excelled at in Spotlight. I'd have given BD to McKay who's direction extremely stood out but he also did some more subtle things to make the film good/entertaining

I did not care for AGI winning another Directing Oscar, like at all. They shoulda given it to George Miller.

Of BD nominees, Inarritu has worked with the most number of popular stars, who influential circles likely gave their votes as well. Leonardo dicaprio, Tom hardy, Brad Pitt, cate blanchett, Sean penn, Naomi watts, Benicia del toro, Emma stone, Edward Norton, Michael Keaton, Javier Bardem. Not sure about Pitt, but I would guess hardy and Keaton voted for him since he helped directed them to get acting noms while Mad Max and Spotlight didn't.

spotlight winning follows the recent BP/BD split trend (Argo, 12YAS) where the movie about the "important topic" wins BP over the "visual epic" winning BD.

Though Argo is a special case. We all know that had Affleck been nominated, he would have won that.

Visually Epic style winning BD should have been Mad Max and not The Revenant but whatever.

Inarritu deserved the win.
