Room or Mad Max. But would not be disappointed by wins for Spotlight or Brooklyn.

Room. Simply a decent group of films, too bad Ex Machina, Inside Out or even Hateful Eight didn't get in.

Clearly Mad Max. Not my favorite of the bunch, but the movie people were most passionate about all year.

Re: Which film deserves to win Best Picture this year?
In ten years time, if we look back at the Best Picture winner in 2016 and we see Spotlight or Room or The Big Short or Bridge of Spies, that will be labelled as such a boring year (again). Seeing Mad Max: Fury Road will be amazing, and could potentially get many people excited for the Oscars again without undermining the Academy's reputation for high art and prestige. It already feels like a masterpiece that everyone loves, like The Dark Knight or Drive.

1. Spotlight 2. Room 3. Mad Max: Fury Road 4. Bridge of Spies 5. The Revenant 6. The Martian 7. Brooklyn 8. The Big Short
Really strong lineup this year. Even the lowest-ranked film on my list is one that I enjoyed very thoroughly.

Re: Which film deserves to win Best Picture this year?
I always like to think of Best Picture as a Time Capsule of sorts, so the winner should be a film with a presumed long shelf life. For me, that automatically rules out the likes of The Big Short, Room, Spotlight, Brooklyn, and Bridge of Spies. All perfectly fine films but more suited for an afternoon watch with your Nan.
Timeless themes of Exploration and Man vs Nature in The Martian and The Revenant are going to be as relevant next year as they'll be in 25 years.
Mad Max: Fury Road falls under instant classic/masterpiece, it's a film that people will continue to revisit over time.

I didn't like The Revenant as much as some of the other candidates, but I agree that the positive spin is it would be a memorable winner, while something like The Big Short wouldn't make much of a mark going forward

Re: Which film deserves to win Best Picture this year?
The other thing that works in The Revenant's favour is that it's a western, which is considered to be a timeless genre.
Someone can pop in their holo-disc in 2085 and the film will click, versus something like The Big Short and all the fast talk about AAA and CDOs which is very much about a specific thing in a specific time in America.

Tough call between Room and Mad Max for me. I'd lean toward Mad Max, as it's more unique.

I guess it was pretty great that The King's Speech won against The Social Network then, considering how time-specific the latter was.

So it doesn't matter that one was a much better film? And shouldn't a film actually capture the zeitgeist?

I'm not sure I buy the argument TSN captured anything. But considering the world's fascination with British Monarchy, TKS should have a longer shelf life.

You don't get this thread, I guess. It is about what film deserves to win the Oscar in the opinion in each poster here.

The Revenant and The Big Short would both be worthy winners IMO. Loved both.
