 Re: Foreign Language Oscar Finalists
Know this category has seen some big upsets, but really don't see anybody beating Ida this year given its subject matter and precursor awards.

 Re: Foreign Language Oscar Finalists
As usual, the finalists already reveal some surprises - no Winter Sleep or Two Days, One Night.
Normally I'd say the nominees will be Wild Tales, Ida, Force Majeure, Timbuktu and Leviathan, but with the Oscars, who knows.

Nominees:
Wild Tales (Argentina) Tangerines (Estonia) Timbuktu (Mauritania) Ida (Poland) Leviathan (Russia)
Ida and Leviathan are curious frontrunners. I don't think they'd necessarily win under the old system where you were required to see all 5. Without that requirement, it's easy to see either one winning as they are much more high-profile.
I am really looking forward to seeing Wild Tales.
Not super surprised Force Majeure missed...I didn't care for it at all.

Since when has it been changed? Is it not still in effect?

But you should be. Surprised, that is. No matter your personal feelings (I have none, since I haven't seen it), a film that wins at the Globes, scores terrific reviews and appears almost everywhere on Best Foreign lists and then doesn't score a nom - that is a surprise.
