What is the biggest surprise of the nominations result?
There are really no big surprises this year comparing to last year, only mid-tier surprises. Hanks missing will probably get my vote given Captain Phillips looked strong all seasons and did well with guild nominations, and Hanks seemed to safely occupy that Denzel Washington slot of certain nomination but no win. The competition is strong though, so could still explain it.

How come nobody's talking about Blue is the Warmest Color miss, did it not make the selection of films before this?

Blue Is the Warmest Color was never eligible for Best Foreign Language Film.

Tom Hanks missing. He hit all the precursors, it's TOM HANKS, and the movie was a Best Picture nominee. Best Actor was just that competitive this year though.

Re: What is the biggest surprise of the nominations result?
Meh. There weren't any big surprised this year. All these are understandable.
Having seen Stories We Tell about two weeks ago I don't understand what's the fuss about it. It's merely an adequate documentary. Not particularly engaging or revealing. Just a nice little docu movie about someone's mother. It's cute at best.
Also I was never a big fan of CP and I'm kinda glad the Academy didn't fell for the cringe worthy bait scenes obviously included to secure Hanks' nomination (the last scene when he goes into the infirmary for instance).

Stories We Tell is an absolutely beautiful movie which turns a specific, personal story into a universal meditation on family and memory. It is a bowl-you-over type of cinematic experience. And anyone who does not bow to it is an asshole. On another note, Rush did not deserve any nominations, in my opinion, except maybe Best Film Editing for its sheer flash and sense of propulsion. Brühl is fine, but not a revelation.

Re: What is the biggest surprise of the nominations result?
I was expecting Hanks to make it so when he didn't that was a surprise but Jonah's nod was more shocking. He wasn't even on my radar.

I just realized Lana Del Rey's Young & Beautiful didn't get nominated for Best Original Song. That's a surprise for me. I really thought she would get the Oscar even.
