Re: National Board of Review 2013
If there is a big surprise, I believe it will be Harrison Ford winning Best Supporting Actor.

Re: National Board of Review 2013
Prisoners seems a good bet to be in the top 10. They love Warner Bros. and it was well-received.

Re: National Board of Review 2013
I believe the Warner Bros. connection/love will benefit Gravity and Her most, but I would not be surprised to see Prisoners as well.

Re: National Board of Review 2013
I predict these films will show up in their Top 10 list:
Inside Llewyn Davis American Hustle The Wolf of Wall Street Captain Phillips Nebraska Her Saving Mr Banks 12 Years a Slave Gravity (winner)
The 10th spot will probably be an oddball choice since the NBR usually throws something like Looper, Where the Wild Things Are, Harry Potter 7.2, Shutter Island,The Bucket List, etc. So I think something like The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, The Great Gatsby, or The Book Thief, can come up here. I'm gonna go with The Great Gatsby.

Re: National Board of Review 2013
Other films I believe could show up on the top ten in a National Board of Review style twist:
The Heat The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Out of the Furnace The Place Beyond the Pines This Is the End

Not surprising. Very well-received film. And it is Warner Bros.

Re: National Board of Review 2013
No Blue is the Warmest Color for foreign films, not even in the top 6. No American Hustle. And after two awards, Gravity has been shut out outside getting the top 10 mention, and 12 Years a Slave only got one award in directing. Pretty interesting start to the awards season.

Re: National Board of Review 2013
So The Wind Rises and Stories We Tell are the only repeat winners for the first two critic groups.

Re: National Board of Review 2013
LOL the NBR increasingly bring the crazy with each year.
Walter Mitty in the top 10 but no American Hustle? K.
Her is an interesting choice, though. I'm dying to see it.

Re: National Board of Review 2013
Since they are so high on Nebraska, it is a shame they did not award June Squibb in Best Supporting Actress. She gives the film's best and most memorable performance.
Sad to see All Is Lost completely left out in the cold, not even earning a citation among the ten independent films.
Emma Thompson over Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett in Best Actress is a surprise. A welcome one, perhaps.
No love for Captain Phillips. Lone Survivor shows up.

Haven't seen most of these unfortunately. But I'm glad Phillips is nowhere to be seen. Hopefully it stays that way.

Re: National Board of Review 2013
They got nothing really right last year, so I don't think it is too much of an indicator this year either.

Re: National Board of Review 2013
Last year nothing turned out to be any indicator before the Globes.
Either way, Her winning is a huge surprise and makes it a likely BP nominee, which I am sure not many saw coming. Since 2001 every single of their Best Film winners has been nominated for BP at the Oscars.
Also, Lone Survivor is basically their "Promised Land" this year - a end-of-the-year entry with some pedigree that won't go anywhere Oscars-wise otherwise.
And they shut out Before Midnight completely too? Weird.
