Re: Full list of Oscar nominations
I'm disappointed at the Inception snubs for director and editing, but other than that, these are some pretty nice nominations. I've seen 8 of the 10 nominees for best picture and loved 7 of those (Black Swan was merely decent). Great to see Winter's Bone get in for picture and Hawkes for supporting, that movie really stays with you. Upset at the complete lack of recognition for Shutter Island in the tech categories, particularly cinematography where it pretty much killed any other film I saw this year. Loving the nom for Powell and the How to Train Your Dragon score, which is my favourite of the year.
Edit: Just noticed no Tron Legacy for visual effects.......wtf!?

Not really a fitting comparison. At that point, The Aviator still had all the monumentum. It has won the PGA and the Globe for BP. It also managed 13 nominations, more than any other film. Million Dollar Baby still had DGA ahead. No. Scorsese losing the Globe to Eastwood for BD shook up the race -- the next day, most ppl were calling BP for M$B. IIRC, it was telling that Eastwood and Swank won despite the movie still in limited release. It had only grossed $5M at that point -- and we were all calling Scorsese a LOCK for Best Director then...

After the Globes I was absolutely certain that Eastwood would win the BD Oscar, but certainly not about M$B winning BP over The Aviator. Also, if you look back, several people here predicted Eastwood to win the Globe for Best Director.

Re: Full list of Oscar nominations
By the way, the Academy REALLY loves Mike Leigh, eh?
His last three films all got Best Original Screenplay nominations. Four of his last five actually (All or Nothing missed).
He's currently at five Screenplay nominations with no wins to date as well as two Best Director nods. I get a sense of an overdue argument building up. Though his films are usually so tiny in the USA, I have a hard time seeing him win one of the major awards for them. At 67, he is also not getting younger...

That would be like ROTK winning BP and Sofia Coppola winning BD. It just doesn't make sense. If Aviator was going to win BP, it came with BD on the side -- because of Scorsese's history of snubs.

No it won't win sound, but everything else it has a shot. But in the end I'm thinking "just" 7.

It won't win Supporting Actress, either. At least I highly, highly doubt they would vote for Bonham Carter over Leo or Steinfeld or even Adams.

Even if Carter loses SAG, there is a similar precedent in 2000. The supportive wife (Marcia Gay Harden, Pollock) wins over the mom (Frances McDormand, Almost Famous) or girlfriend (Kate Hudson, Almost Famous). Carter's chances are at least stronger than Melissa Leo without an BAFTA nom and vote splits with Adams.
