I do wonder if WALL-E and TDK were really all that far apart, though. At least WALL-E had a Screenplay nomination. Nolan got shut out entirely. There was reason to really think that TDK had a realistic shot at a nomination, especially with its precursors.

Slumdog Millionaire is far and away my favorite movie. And I've seen a zillion movies this year, including all the contenders.
It's very easy to say it's only winning because it's a 'weak year.' I could see Slumdog beating No Country for Old Men.
