I couldn’t sleep. I took a shower, I started washing dishes, I did a load of laundry… I was completely losing my mind waiting for that local ABC telecast. My heart jumped when Josh Brolin got nominated, but the tears started flowing when Gus got his. I couldn’t have asked for a better director for this project, a fiercer protector of this little spec script that meant so much to me. And that script would have been nothing without the dedicated talent of nominee Sean Penn, who truly inhabited Harvey’s soul, and Josh Brolin, James Franco, Emile Hirsch, Diego Luna, Alison Pill, Joseph Cross, and on and on. This film was a real team effort. By the time the nominations got to Best Picture, I was a wreck. Tears… lots of tears. I couldn’t breathe. My big hope had been that the Academy would recognize our film enough that Harvey’s story could get a wider release, but I could never have predicted 8 nominations including Best Picture. I’m still pinching myself. When I first heard Harvey’s story at 13, I was a closeted kid living in a conservative Mormon, military home. It was a rough time for me. Hearing Harvey’s story not only gave me the hope he talked so often about, it very likely saved my life. What happened this morning means this film WILL win a wider audience, and maybe, just maybe Harvey’s message will reach some of those kids out there today who have been told they are “less than,†that they are sick, that God does not love them, and perhaps, from the grave, 30 years later, Harvey might give those kids the hope and love he gave me so long ago. It might sound overblown to some, but I firmly believe these nominations are life-saving. I can’t thank the Academy enough." I hope he gets AIDS and dies.

I'm so glad Benjamin got so many noms. Totally deserved. I hope it wins BP.

I just realized: no John Williams! Heh.
Fun fact: All the movies that were nominated for four acting awards and not Best Picture (Othello, I Remember Mama, My Man Godfrey) got ZERO Oscars. Would Doubt continue the "curse?"
Another fun fact: My Man Godfrey was also nominated for Screenplay and Directing.

I wouldn't completely count out Davis or Streep yet, but "Doubt" could very well go home empty-handed.

Yeah, barring a really strange turn of events, Doubt's not winning anything.

Streep was amazing in Doubt and she's been nominated 11 (?) times in a row since her last win, which was what, 20 years ago.

Comment posted on Big Hollywood (Steve Mason's site) by a user: Quote: It’s as if the Academy finally gave the Best Picture award to the final Lord of the Rings movie, almost as an apology for ignoring the first two films  and then turned around and collectively said: “As God is my witness, I will NEVER give this award to a blockbuster or a special-effects extravaganza or a f__king FANTASY MOVIE, EVER again. From now on, we stick with the goddamned dramas  and the less uplifting, the better!†And another: Quote: They [Hollywood) are more into making a “statement†than making money these days, it seems. And it will cost them in the long run. Sad but true. Not nominating TDK was a big mistake, one ABC is surely not happy about as the ratings would have been huge had it received a BP nom.

One bright side to Oscar night this year is that we'll most likely get another Angelina death stare to whoever wins Best Actress!

Re: The Official Oscar Nominations Thread - (First Post Updated)
according to the MovieFone poll: -Slumdog will win Picture, with Ben Button in a solid second (The Reader is in distant third) -Boyle will win Director easily -Rourke will win Actor barely over Pitt and Penn -Winslet will win Actress easily -Ledger will rape Supporting Actor -Cruz will win Supporting Actress narrowly over Tomei and Henson -Milk will will O. Screenplay narrowly over Wall-E -Slumdog will win A. Screenplay pretty handily
I know, what do they know, but this doesn't seem too far off from how I see the actual Oscars turning out.

No Clint is very disappointing.
Also, I really don't see how Winslet could not get nominated for supporting after winning the Globe. Farrell not getting lead actor is understandable as it wasn't the deepest if still entertaining role, but don't supporting wins at the globes almost always get an oscar nomination.

Because she got nominated for the same role for lead?
