 Re: Happy with the noms? The Reader deserves every nomination it received. I just wish the love had been extended to David Kross, who is wonderful in the film.

Pretty impressive actually. Only 2 of them in any of the big 8 though... Best Supporting Actor and Best Original Screenplay

Even though I stopped predicting TDK back in December, I still knew that it was clear #5 by most standards, so once NOLAN was snubbed for DALDRY I knew it was all over, so that stung. And I was predicting WALL-E to make it in instead, so that they snubbed both blockbusters was pretty sucky. But I got over it mostly. I just hope that those that refuse to get over it don't bitch too much for the next month.
As for Slumdog being conventional, I'd say TDK being a Superhero film pretty much automatically makes it less conventional in Oscar terms, though Slumdog is still a starless foreign film with apparently stretches of nothing but subtitles. It'd be one of the least conventional winners the Academy has had, and the least conventional of our current batch of nominees.

You're correct; I was basing my comment on the earlier version of this list before some of the other films came out. Still, many of those in the top are documentaries, so if you take those out you get: 1. The Wrestler (98%) 2. 4 Months, 3 weeks and 2 days (97%) 3. Let the Right one In (97%) 4. Wall E (96%) 5. The Black Balloon (96%) 6. Slumdog Millionaire (95%) 7. The Dark Knight (94%) 8. Waltz with bashir (94%) 9. Alexandra (94%) 10. Jar City (94%) My point still is that of the films nominated, they tended to ignore some of the better reviewed ones for the "Oscar" type of film they always love. Benjamin Button, for instance, isn't even on the Top 100 list for 2008. Re: Happy with the noms? I wouldn't rank My Winnipeg as a documentary, or at least not anymore than Spinal Tap/Waiting for Guffman, or other movies that use the doc structure but are scripted fiction and all. Frost/Nixon even can fit in there, though not to the level of those three.

What I wonder: why do I let myself get caught up in the Oscar frenzy, year after year, when not once (at least since 2001 or so) have any of my favorite films been adequately honored? Once again, I'm a fool for buying into the hype of the 'significance' of the Academy Awards.

That also happens to be a decades-spanning epic with a major star, a massive budget and past winners, and a film that almost everyone has been predicting to be nominated for the last year. It's easily more conventional than Slumdog.
