Why Do You Guys Think Eastwood Is Locked For an Acting Nom?
I really am out of the loop, so I haven't been keeping up. Is it because you feel that ANY critical attention toward the beloved Clint Eastwood automatically means he'll get some academy love? I have no clue what SAG nominated this year, or really anything else. Was Clint involved with that, or was the film not screened in time or something? Do you guys veiw him as a Frances McDormand type, who can seemingly come out of nowhere, without support before the Oscar noms, and regardless of movie quality or performance, still get in?
Why is Clint in? (besides the fact the the film and the performance are brilliant!)

Why is Clint in? (besides the fact the the film and the performance are brilliant!) saw it yesterday, LOVVVVVED IT! Anyway, a question that always was on my mind, do you see a big difference in Clint whether he is staring in a western, crime or other kind of movie. Mostly, I always see the same bad-ass Clint just protecting his own, kicking ass and being Clint.

I wouldn't say he's a lock, but very likely.
Why? Cos' the Academy LOVES Clint. Cos' it's his last performance apparently. And cos' he was nominated for Million Dollar Baby without ANY precursors.

The answer is simple. It's because he's Clint.

I'm not sure he's locked.
Sean Penn, Frank L. and Rourke, yeah.
Pitt and Eastwood likely.

Million Dollar Baby was getting in everywhere for Picture, Director, Actress, and Supporting Actor. As much as I think Gran Torino is every bit it's equal, and Mystic River's equal, it's just a notch below how well those were recieved by critics. Audiences probably like Gran Torino best, I'd say. Although critics are idiots, and follow the flock more often than not. Since it become "popular" to like this movie, critics have started embracing it even more. It's up to 77% with a 7.0 rating.

The movie going public is liking this, almost equal to Unforgiven - which was of course better due to the whole cast. Hopefully the critics rating will soon get into the 80's.

Re: Why Do You Guys Think Eastwood Is Locked For an Acting Nom?
The problem with Gran Torino is that it's popularity aspect seemingly (and probably) came too late in the game. By the time it really premiered and made the money and impact last week most of the ballots and guilds had decided.
So if popularity/public/box office would be a factor in its nomination it would have had to make that impact earlier in the season.
This is a film where you can make the case for the BO having a bigger impact, IMO.

If Clint gets in, which I believe he will, then the huge popularity of GRAN TORINO will have an impact, and at this point I could see Clint winning.

However...Million Dollar Baby got no precursors at all for Best Actor, at least Gran Torino got some (National Board of Review and a BFCA nom, I think).

Clint's getting in somewhere. And rather than cause a mass riot by nominating Changeling or Gran Torino for Best Director/Picture, he'll get a Best Actor/Song combo nod.

Clint won't win. Hollywood is in love with the Rourke story. He's pretty much got it in the bag at this point.

Well, at least one of us was thinking things through.
