Quote:
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is an American fantasy comedy horror film directed by Tim Burton from a screenplay by the writing team of Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, based on a story by Gough, Millar, and Seth Grahame-Smith. A sequel to Beetlejuice (1988) and the second film of the Beetlejuice franchise, it stars Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O'Hara reprising their roles alongside new cast members Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, Jenna Ortega, and Willem Dafoe.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice opened the 81st Venice International Film Festival on August 28, 2024. It was theatrically released overseas on September 4, 2024, and in the United States two days later on September 6, 2024, by Warner Bros. Pictures.

This was more fun and chaotic than I thought it'd be. Guess low expectations helped but it's an easy watch.

I never loved the original and felt the same about this one. Great aesthetic from Burton, some funny jokes, a few strong performances ... well you would think that would add up to a great movie, but it just doesn't for some reason. I was mostly done with it by the musical sequence at the end and just didn't even care enough to be bothered by the countless subplots resolving with a resounding nothing. Ortega's characer is probably the biggest disappointment since her whole storyline was basically the same as it was in Wednesday.

Despite all that, I still didn't dislike it though, its amusing enough. 6/10ish. Again, basically the same way I felt about the first. I've never rewatched that film and I doubt I will ever rewatch this one either. So it really just comes down to whether you like Burton or not, which I do. Any fan of his will be fine with this film.

The first one just had a lot of charm and was really his first in his run of hits. I think at the time his style was so new that it garnered a favorable reaction for how fresh it was. Then over time it just kept playing during Halloween to get a holiday favorability buffer and it just sorta stuck around as a cult classic

My Burton rankings:

4.5/5:

Mars Attacks
Sweeney Todd

4

Batman Returns
Batman
Ed Wood
Big Fish
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

3.5

Miss Peregrine
Edward Scissorhands
Sleepy Hollow

3

Beetlejuice
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

...oops

Planet of the Apes
Alice In Wonderland

2.5

Frankenweenie

No all time favorites, some disappointments, but overall a very solid filmography. I should probably check out the remaining four.

Big Fish is his best movie imo

This was fine albeit foregettable. It's certainly enjoyable and the cast is game - Catherine O'Hara in particular is a hoot - but it's also very conventional and so many setups and story threads end up going nowhere. B-

It’s visually impressive I’m sure it’s a lot of green screen but it looks very believable. It’s fun however there’s a bunch of predictable plot beats, even if a few caught me by surprise.

Ortegas plot line could be cut from the movie and packaged into an episode of Wednesday and it would fit almost perfectly

This is 2 movies that was completely saved on the cutting room floor and more likely the strikes. The first half of the film is basically dumb and dumber 2 Coming to America 2, Burton doing a shell reboot of himself, which isn't bad but filled with possibly the most cliche plots that go nowhere.

However the second half is such a pivot into a nice romantic plot twist with the daughter that forces lydia to team up with Beettlejuice that the film becomes a 45 minute music montage filled with one liners and just mayhem which I just digged. Keaton once he truly shows up the film ramps up to 11 and never stops. Because of that it's a recommend, I think the second half of this movie will be on replay, the first never again. B+. PS, major props to MacArthur park, Dumbledoore singing mixed with Burton is genius. B+

Finally caught this and it's a fun 2 hours. It doesn't take itself too seriously and it's good escapism. Its clear how this resonated to a nearly $300M gross. People wanted escapism and this is so ridiculous that it works.
