![Post Post](./styles/serene/imageset/icon_topic_latest.gif) The Godfather: Part II
The Godfather: Part II![Image](http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/0/03/Godfather_part_ii.jpg) Quote: The Godfather Part II is a 1974 American gangster film directed by Francis Ford Coppola from a script co-written with Mario Puzo. The film is both a sequel and a prequel to The Godfather, chronicling the story of the Corleone family following the events of the first film while also depicting the rise to power of the young Vito Corleone before the events of the first film. The film stars Al Pacino, Robert Duvall, Diane Keaton, Robert De Niro, John Cazale, Talia Shire, Michael V. Gazzo and Lee Strasberg.
The Godfather Part II was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and won six, including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor for Robert De Niro, and has been selected for preservation in the U.S. National Film Registry. Love it. A

Just finished watching this and it was a great film. I think the first half is much better then the 2nd half...Vitos backstory was so interesting and I wish we would have had more info from when he killed the guy who wanted 200 dollars to helping the old lady. Also I would have liked to see his empire rise and stuff. But none the less great film. Tomorrow I will hopefully watch the 3rd one but as of now it stands as this...Godfather 1- A+...Godfather 2- A...Godfather 3- Unknown.

The first one is in my top 10 all-time, but will only give a B+ to the second. Just not as tight as the first as the plot kept going to all the different places. Brando's Corlene in Part I is also more memorable, with less screen time, than Al Pacino's Michael in Part II.

I think the best way to describe how great it is is that after it's nearly 3.5 hour running time, I didn't want it to end.

It had its moments, and the Vito sub-story makes up for the rather characterless Michael main story, but still I had myself getting drawsy through this film.

I agree that the best part of the film were the flashbacks.
However.... ****
And the best Godfather.

I'm really confused. I'm not sure how anyone can consider this to be the best sequel ever made or better than the first one. It simply doesn't measure up. Yes, the de Niro storyline is fantastic, but there's far too little of it, as the film focuses too much on the rather boring Pacino storyline. Other than the Fredo stuff, everything else in the 'present-day' story is just bland. Pacino is great, but the film is sorely lacking a performance like Brando's in the first one to impress the audience. De Niro is good, but not anywhere near Brando (but really, who is?). Probably one of the most overrated films of all time for me.

On the whole not quite as good as the first, though as others have said, the flashback parts with DeNiro were better than the first. If they had made an entire movie concentrating on just those parts it could have been better than the first.

indeed the flashback to de niro is the best part in the whole series.
BUT the first movie is overall better.

![Post Post](./styles/serene/imageset/icon_topic_latest.gif) Re: The Godfather: Part II
A wonderful continuation of The Godfather story. When I saw this and the first film some twenty years ago, I felt an ever so slight preference to this over the first film, but now when I rewatched both at this time I feel the other way around. This sequel has many strengths however, the length works in its favor as I become totally lost in that world and the story of Vito coming to and making it in New York is some of the best prequel storytelling ever put to screen. In parallel with that, Michael's development as mafia boss is very well done and as a whole the two stories are engrossing and gripping throughout. Pacino is even more magnificent and commanding of the screen in this than in the first film, definitely one of my favorite performances ever. It's hard to separate these first two Godfather films in terms of how well they form an epic saga, and in that form there are few better film experiences out there.
