Quote:
The Invisible Man is a 2020 science fiction horror film written and directed by Leigh Whannell. It is a contemporary adaptation of the novel of the same name by H. G. Wells and a reboot of The Invisible Man film series, it follows a woman who believes she is being haunted by her abusive partner, despite him apparently having died. The film stars Elisabeth Moss, Aldis Hodge, Storm Reid, Harriet Dyer, and Oliver Jackson-Cohen. It is an international co-production of the United States and Australia.

Development of a new Invisible Man film began as early as 2007. The project was announced to be revived as part of Universal's shared cinematic universe in 2016, intended to consist of their classic monsters, with Johnny Depp attached to star in the title role. After The Mummy was released in 2017 to critical and financial failures, development was halted in all projects. In early 2019, the studio changed their plans from a serialized universe to films based on individualized story-telling, and the project reentered development. Principal photography commenced in July 2019 and wrapped that September in Sydney, Australia.

The Invisible Man is scheduled to be released in the United States on February 28, 2020, by Universal Pictures. The film received positive reviews from critics, with praise for Moss's performance and the combination of scares with "a smart narrative about how women can be manipulated and abused in harmful relationships"

This was great. A great mix of scifi and horror even though some of the scenes don't make sense after the reveal its creepy throughout and Moss is just spectacular and captivating here (much like Handmaid's Tale). The final dinner scene needed to be more creepy but I guess that's because of Jackson-Cohen who was trying to be an eye-candy(?).

I really enjoyed this for the most part, but man are there a lot of insane and illogical things that happen in this movie, especially in the second and third acts. The set up here was great for that first hour or so though, and when it comes to the direction and performances overall I think Leigh Whannell really excelled in those areas. I found it pretty intense and suspenseful from beginning to the end and Elizabeth Moss is just fantastic all the way through. Her performance really sells you on the abuse that her character has suffered without actually even seeing it and that makes it even more effective IMO. I also loved the dynamic she had with Aldis Hodge's and Stormi Reid's characters.

Also, my god at that restaurant scene. It's honestly been a while since a film really caught me off guard like that and made my jaw drop. It was brilliantly done.

I thought this was solid but kinda overpraised. Moss is excellent and some of the sequences are well done but I was surprised how much I didn't really find myself involved more. Maybe it's cause you never see how their relationship was, which I guess didn't need to be shown but idk. Much prefer Whannel's Upgrade.

The scene in the restaurant did make me gasp though.

That restaurant scene had me open-mouthed till they close the scene. Somehow reminded me of Upgrade though TIM's surprise is much much bigger.

I thought this was excellent until
Spoiler: show
that twist with the brother. Why was this necessary? It was working so well being straight-forward. I wasn't a fan of how the rest played out.
It really bothers me. Maybe somehow it would work better for me a second time around. But for now it doesn't really sit well with me and brought it down from being pretty terrific to just really good.

It's a nicely done film though. Opening is excellent and suspenseful. Elisabeth Moss is great. The score is superb. It also looks like it cost much more than 7 Million.

And yeah that scene in the restaurant made me audibly gasp. Did not see that coming. Great scene.

This was a delight. I haven't been that tense/scared during a movie in a while. I was nervous the entire film. Very good pacing, acting by Moss and jump scares. Pleasantly surprised by this. There was some plot convenience and wonky CGI but overall, dang good.

And that restaurant scene... Holy hell.

An empty chair has never felt more intimidating. The camerawork in this movie is quite brilliant. It's always either spying on one our characters, or focusing on a blank space that could actually be a sinister force. The score is also fantastic, making every moment that much more intense.

I think the movie suffers on the character front though. I know we're supposed to believe every woman who says she has been a victim of abuse, and Moss really sells the trauma so we don't have to stretch our imaginations too much, but I kinda wish there had been one more scene at the beginning to show us why we should care. Her initial escape was intense, but also slow and sloppy, and if she can barely handle a sleeping man it left me with doubts about her ability to deal with an invisible one. And even though she does win at the end, she's never given a character trait other than Victim. Nor is Johnny Depp given one other than asshole. There are no shades of grey in the dark universe. I also kinda wish it had been the brother, and that Depp really was dead all along .. or is he? Just something to shake up the narrative.

We don't really need to see her be physically abused. It's pretty clear from her fear that she is. And then he abuses her when he's invisible so....

Yeah I was pleased that we didn't see that physical abuse, made for a smart last scene though as I mentioned would have loved that final scene to be more devious.

Maybe not physical abuse, but maybe a scene where they're hosting a party and all their friends and family are around and they all think they are the perfect couple, but there are subtle clues as to what is really going on. Or how about a scene or even a line that showed who these people were before they met each other? Or how about a backstory for the black guy who is there to be supportive when the plot needs it and unsupportive when the plot needs it. None of these characters have any depth, except for maybe the brother who seems kinda sympathetic at first but is also just an asshole.

But even though I'm complaining a lot, the movie is a great production and legit tense throughout. So I'd probably up my grade from the initial viewing on repeats, and will likely nominate it for Score, Cinematography, Actress and Horror at the 2021 KJ awards. Definitely not writing though, and it’s just frustrating that the shallow plot and characters kept it from being a masterclass of the genre.

I'm usually not a big horror fan but The Invisible Man had me hooked from the first minute on. Great little thriller and also the last movie I saw before Corona.

It's amazing and Mos has a legit shot at the Oscars if Rona keeps things as dry as they have been.

It's a nice atmospheric film with good thrills throughout, but I also find they got a bit too bombastic with the action towards the end. The film is way more effective when it plays on the psychological aspect, also the characters felt a bit too thin, underwritten to highlight suspense instead. Moss is good though and it entertains, I was just never really wowed by it and I don't think it's that much better than Hollow Man.
