 Enemy of the State
Enemy of the State Quote: Enemy of the State is a 1998 spy-thriller film about a group of rogue NSA agents who kill a US Congressman and try to cover up the murder. It was written by David Marconi, directed by Tony Scott, and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, and it stars Will Smith, Gene Hackman, Jon Voight, Lisa Bonet and Regina King.
The film grossed over US$250,000,000 worldwide ($111,549,836 domestically). The reason why Jerry Bruckheimer is awesome. Enemy of the State is a fantastic action movie on all levels. It's fast, smart, and damn entertaining. Great casting choices like Will Smith, Gene Hackman, and Jon Voight. Seriously, it's up there for one of the best action movies of all-time. A+

I actually really liked this movie. One of the later action gov't conspiracy flicks I actually enjoyed. For awhile there was a good run of Grisham adaptations, but then...nothing. Enemy of the State revived the genre and kept its cast leads from going overboard. Though he was central, Smith never goes overkill on his humorous one-liners, and I think his sympathetic face and "everyday" guy personality are put to best use here when he's accidentally pulled into the conspiracy when restricted information is buried into his pocket. Gene Hackman is the real star of this piece...doing a reprisal of his much earlier and wonderful role as a surviellance expert in The Conversation (one of my faves). They really get along quite well, and the movie keeps a high pace without losing intrigue or getting too dark. These are the kind of action movies I really like.

What's not to like about the film? Awesome in every way.

I'm gonna break from the consensus here.
I find the movie to be bland in the exteme, utterly unremarkable in nearly every sense. Neither thrilling or fun. And Will Smith, who is usually, even the worst of crap, charming, comes across as unbearably smarmy here, especially in the first half.
I too, however, got a great kick of Gene Hackman's almost-reprisal of his CONVERSATION role. I wish it had been in a better film.

"Why'd you just blow up the building?"
"Because you made a phone call!"
A+, one of my favorites. Intense and entertaining throughout the entire movie.

One of the very best action-thrillers ever made and definitely makes my Top 5 of Bruckheimer flicks, maybe even my Top 3. Smith is good in his role, Hackman is even better. The finale is ingenious.

Fantastic action flick with a great story. The two leads have great chemistry, and the action actually serves the story, instead of the other way around. Tony Scott's direction, with his trademark quick cuts, fits the film perfectly, and the bird's-eye cinematography works well too. Will Smith gives another likable, magnetic performance, and Gene Hackman provides a nice counterpiece to his work in The Conversation. There's an expansive young supporting cast, and the villains are evil without being one-dimensional. One of the best thrillers of the last ten years.

It's an awful, awful film. Clumsily directed and distractingly edited with a dumb story and innumerable annoying characters who behave in illogical ways because that's what the plot demands. Teenagers will lap this big, dumb movie up, everybody else will likely come away thinking 'What a piece of crap!' - and they'll be right.
Grade: somewhere between a D and an F.

I'll take this awesomely made film any day of the week over most of the tripe that's out there. Hackman should have won an oscar for this film.

I can't really say I know many people over the age of 30 that don't enjoy this film.

 Re: Enemy of the State
Just watched this on Instant Netflix... and wow! Blown away. Fantastic cast. Will Smith is at his perfect state - no advance powers or futuristic weapons, just a sharp guy you can relate to. Jon Voight and Gene Hackman are great additions, along with awesome tech cast from Jack Black to Seth Green. This great cast is perfectly balanced with a great script and production. I think the coolest part of the movie is how believable the whole thing is. It never goes too over the top, but also never gets boring for a second. Eagle Eye now looks pathetic compared to this.

I really like it, apart from the silly Wild Bunch typical tarantino ending of the 90s. Apart from that its pretty dam entertaining til then.

 Re: Enemy of the State
Just watched this for the first time and it's amazing. Was it released in the summer?
THIS is what a summer blockbuster should be. Mostly believable, witty, fun, thought-provoking.
I saw "Pelican Brief" before this and that while enjoyable still relied on such conveniences like the dog barking right when the assassin was about to kill Roberts and Washington and the keys and bomb etc. Bad writing I would think but that goes back to Grisham. Saw "Firm" the other day and for being the best Grisham novel supposedly, it was just really lame.
I agree with MGCasey's statement 2 years ago that it puts Eagle Eye to shame. From what I remember of that movie, it was pretty good until the finale and it was never really realistic. Of course a movie doesn't need to be one, but this just rooted Smith down so well it was fantastic. He doesn't kill anyone I think and that's pretty cool since these days the hero always seems to know how to use guns and suddenly develops fighting skills and whatnot.

And The Firm is definitely not the best Grisham novel. The best Grisham novel (and, to this date, still the best film adaptation) is A Time to Kill.
